Best Caffeine Substitutes for Healthy Hair

Best Caffeine Substitutes for Healthy Hair

I absolutely love coffee and I most people I know can’t go through their day without their usual dose of caffeine. If I am not careful, however, I can overdo it with my daily intake. If you’re like me and you simply love the taste of coffee, it’s important to be conscientious of how much of it you drink because it has some serious repercussions for your skin and hair. Caffeine causes your body to lose B vitamins (among other nutrients) which are needed for healthy hair growth and strength. Below is a list of my favorite coffee substitutes that will give you the kick you need without the compromise: Chia Seeds I am never going to forget the first time I tried a beverage with chia seeds in it (Kombucha, to be exact). I was amazed at the intense kick of energy that I got sans the caffeine-induced shakiness and that energy remained consistent all day.
This superfood has a rich history: the ancient Aztec warriors consumed chia seeds to maintain a consistent stream of energy, increased stamina and endurance during their long conquests. Chia seeds create energy because they contain sky-high levels of soluble and insoluble fibers which balance blood sugar levels by promoting a slow conversion of starches to sugars. They are also a complete protein, filled with vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids; All of these components work together to create long lasting energy. B Vitamins It makes sense that we should supplement with B vitamins since we need them for healthy hair and skin. B vitamins boost energy, prevent fatigue, and help us maintain an overall sense of well being An adequate level of B vitamins ensure that we get quality sleep because they play a critical role in the formation of melatonin, “the sleep hormone.” They promote optimal bodily function and a sense of calm by regulating the health of the nervous system which are all essential for inner as well as outer health. B vitamins are also essential in energy metabolism because they convert food into energy and aid in the production and release of energy into the body.
Green Juice The ample amount of nutrients in green juice packs a high energy punch and is a powerful substitute for the morning coffee. Drinking green juice restores your body back to balance by replenishing it with a highly digestible dose of vitamins, enzymes, minerals and phytonutrients. It is also abundant in chlorophyll which helps oxygenate the blood creating increased brain function and physical energy. The amount of nutrients that you consume through green juice tremendously help the health of your hair. What are your favorite ways to substitute coffee? Crazy Hair Trend: Velaterapia

Crazy Hair Trend: Velaterapia

There are no shortage of crazy trends as you may very well know- from fitness, to fashion, to nutrition, and now even hair! The latest hair care craze you may have heard about is called Velaterapia, the act of burning your hair with a candle in order to rid your strands of split-ends. At this point you are probably thinking, “But wait, aren’t we supposed avoid burning our hair?” And who could blame you, this fad seems pretty out there at first, but could it be that there is more to it? Velaterapia first caught mass attention when Victoria’s Secret model, Alessandra Ambrosio, posted an Instagram photo of herself getting the treatment done. To begin the process, the stylist  first separates your hair into sections. Next, each section is twisted, and finally a candle flame is gently grazed up and down across the twisted sections in order to burn off the split ends and leave your hair looking shiny. The process is said to seal the strands after burning off the split and damaged parts, leaving behind a passage of nutrients to its interior, and giving your hair a healthier appearance. It can be done on dyed or natural hair and is said to work well on all hair types. One Velaterapia treatment can take up to four hours, so if you are booking in appointment make sure you have ample time.  This sounds like a God-send, but is it safe and does it have possible long-term negative consequences for your strands? Where safety is concerned, my suggestion is to go to a professional. One YouTube search and you’ll have about twenty DIY Velaterapia videos which I highly discourage you from trying at home. Remember that one time when you cut your own bangs and lived to regret it? Imagine that feeling and multiply by 100 and you’ll start to somewhat understand how you will feel if you do an at-home Velaterapia treatment and it goes wrong. Ouch! As far as possible long-term consequences, there is a possibility that it might weaken your hair strands by making them more vulnerable. There just may be more effective way to deal with split ends (an old fashioned trim, for example). Would you ever try Velaterapia? Let me know if the comments below! Top Picks for Hairsprays

Top Picks for Hairsprays

I’m from Chicago and it’s true what they say- it really is the “Windy City.” Naturally, this spells out disaster for your hair as the high impact of heavy wind does not take kindly to long locks. Yes, I am a Master Hair Colorist, but my connoisseur status has developed more out of necessity than my expertise with all things hair-related. Below are my top picks for hairspray’s that get the job done while maintaining the health of your hair. Best for healthy hair: Stylbrid 9 by Sebastian is ideal if you are serious about maintaining hair health. This magnificent product helps bring out the natural shine in your hair and compliments with an additional touch of sleek. It also provides maximum hold and volume all the while protecting your hair from UV and heat. is the perfect primer – for sleek looks with natural shine and hold, defined curls, texture and volume. Best for maximum hold: Elnett Satin Extra Strong Hold Hairspray is an ideal option for strong winds, even the mighty Chicago wind. I love recommending this hairspray to clients who need their hair to hold all day. It is ideal for red carpet events, photo shoots, weddings, etc. Best smelling: For a romantic night when you require your hair to hold, but you also want your hair to smell like heaven, opt for Oribe Hairspray. It’s a lightweight option and it leaves your hair soft (perfect for running your fingers through). It also smells so good that you will want to use it as perfume. Best for every day use: My choice for the practicality and function of your day to day is Sebastian Shaper Plus Hairspray. For all intents and purposes, this hairspray is as classic as it they get. What I love most about is that I actually control the level of volume of my hair when I use it, so it is a versatile option for many hairstyles. It is light-weight and it doesn’t make your hair feel stiff which is wonderful because you don’t have to wash your hair as frequently. What is your favorite hairspray? Summer Hair Product Picks

Summer Hair Product Picks

An element that has a profound effect on hair health, appearance, and overall behavior is the weather. The winters cold, for example, doesn’t just make you feel cold, but it also has the tendency to create drier and duller results for your skin and hair. While it doesn’t have the drying effects of winter, the summer heat can be equally frustrating. During summer our hair tends to get oilier faster, can fall victim to humidity, and the sun can seriously damage your hair if you aren’t careful to protect it (a leave-in with SPF or a chic hat are a couple of ways to do this). The best way to go about ensuring that your hair is staying healthy and looking beautiful despite the weather is to be flexible with your hair routine. As a master hair colorist, one piece of advice that I always give my clients is to change up their hair routine with the season. During summer, you naturally want to go for products that are lighter, yet still pack the same dose of nutrient punch for the hair. Below is a list of some of my absolute favorites- the summer hair saviors- as I like to call them. Kérastase Discipline Fluidissime Anti-Frizz Hairspray: I am a huge fan of the Kérastase product line in general, especially this particular product. This is a thermal anti-frizz hairspray making it a great option for styling. It provides amazing control, yet doesn’t give you that sticky and stiff feel that comes along with many other brands of hairspray. It’s double the benefit because it protects your hair from the heat, and actually helps make it easier to blow-dry. Other benefits include mega-watt shine that lasts for up to 72 hours, and it is a strong product for a wide variety of hair types (fine, coarse, or even unmanageable). Sebastian Dry Clean Only Dry Shampoo: Dry shampoo is possibly one of the greatest gifts bestowed upon mankind- if you are a female with long hair, you know that I am not exaggerating. Most of my clients go through bottles very quickly and even faster in summer because the weather makes our hair susceptible to getting oily and our activity levels tend to be higher during the summer. There are so many to pick from, but Dry Clean Only is my absolute favorite because it completely shifts the appearance of hair from drab to a textured and voluminous all while cleansing the hair of impurities. I also love that it’s a spray formula because I find that this makes it easier to use and provides better results. Spray Dry Clean Only on each section of your roots, then make sure to...

Best Kept Secret for Beautiful Hair: Relaxation

Best Kept Secret for Beautiful Hair: Relaxation

If you’ve been keeping up with my blog, my social media, any article I’ve written for magazine, or interview that I have done, then you have no doubt heard me preach about the importance of healthy hair. The truth is that no matter how skilled your colorist or how amazing the products you use, they can only do so much if your hair is a frazzled mess. Overtime, we’ve talked about several different ways to get healthy hair- less heat styling, all natural products, even foods for healthy hair- but I would say that today’s tip is one of the (it not THE) most important of all: Relaxation. Stress is terrible for your health in general, and kills your hair directly and can also lead you to coping mechanisms that are damaging for hair (i.e. smoking, drinking, unhealthy food). The reality is that we are all busy and stressed out at least some of the time, so it’s vital that we take some time out to de-stress and center ourselves. Below are three of my favorite ways to disconnect and rejuvenate: Take a spa day: By far my favorite way to unwind is by going to a spa and pampering myself. I have an intense travel and work schedule pretty much year-round, and while I absolutely love what I do, it definitely takes a toll on me. Recently I took a weekend off at Spa Montage at the Montage in Laguna Beach after a particularly busy week. Facials, a detox wrap, a body scrub and a massage are just what the doctor ordered to get me feeling energetic and inspired. I highly recommend this spa for those of you who live in Southern California- it is otherworldly. View outside my hotel room balcony at Montage Laguna- breathtaking, isn’t it? Feeling refreshed and glowing after having spent the entire day at the spa getting facials, scrubs, and massages. Break a sweat: A spa getaway is wonderful, but to de-stress on a daily basis I like to hit the gym. As the saying goes, when your body feels great so does your mind; Working out helps to release endorphins (feel good chemicals in the brain that act as natural pain killers) which improve sleep and reduce stress. If working out at the gym by yourself sounds tedious, shake it up a little by looking to classes. There are so many to choose from that there will definitely be something that motivates you. Some of my favorites are Soul Cycle, Best Butt Ever (at Equinox), and Hot 8 Yoga. Take a hike: One of the things that I adore about living in Southern California is that there are many gorgeous and serene hiking...
