Summer Hair Product Picks

Summer Hair Product Picks

An element that has a profound effect on hair health, appearance, and overall behavior is the weather. The winters cold, for example, doesn’t just make you feel cold, but it also has the tendency to create drier and duller results for your skin and hair. While it doesn’t have the drying effects of winter, the summer heat can be equally frustrating. During summer our hair tends to get oilier faster, can fall victim to humidity, and the sun can seriously damage your hair if you aren’t careful to protect it (a leave-in with SPF or a chic hat are a couple of ways to do this). The best way to go about ensuring that your hair is staying healthy and looking beautiful despite the weather is to be flexible with your hair routine. As a master hair colorist, one piece of advice that I always give my clients is to change up their hair routine with the season. During summer, you naturally want to go for products that are lighter, yet still pack the same dose of nutrient punch for the hair. Below is a list of some of my absolute favorites- the summer hair saviors- as I like to call them. Kérastase Discipline Fluidissime Anti-Frizz Hairspray: I am a huge fan of the Kérastase product line in general, especially this particular product. This is a thermal anti-frizz hairspray making it a great option for styling. It provides amazing control, yet doesn’t give you that sticky and stiff feel that comes along with many other brands of hairspray. It’s double the benefit because it protects your hair from the heat, and actually helps make it easier to blow-dry. Other benefits include mega-watt shine that lasts for up to 72 hours, and it is a strong product for a wide variety of hair types (fine, coarse, or even unmanageable). Sebastian Dry Clean Only Dry Shampoo: Dry shampoo is possibly one of the greatest gifts bestowed upon mankind- if you are a female with long hair, you know that I am not exaggerating. Most of my clients go through bottles very quickly and even faster in summer because the weather makes our hair susceptible to getting oily and our activity levels tend to be higher during the summer. There are so many to pick from, but Dry Clean Only is my absolute favorite because it completely shifts the appearance of hair from drab to a textured and voluminous all while cleansing the hair of impurities. I also love that it’s a spray formula because I find that this makes it easier to use and provides better results. Spray Dry Clean Only on each section of your roots, then make sure to...

Best Kept Secret for Beautiful Hair: Relaxation

Best Kept Secret for Beautiful Hair: Relaxation

If you’ve been keeping up with my blog, my social media, any article I’ve written for magazine, or interview that I have done, then you have no doubt heard me preach about the importance of healthy hair. The truth is that no matter how skilled your colorist or how amazing the products you use, they can only do so much if your hair is a frazzled mess. Overtime, we’ve talked about several different ways to get healthy hair- less heat styling, all natural products, even foods for healthy hair- but I would say that today’s tip is one of the (it not THE) most important of all: Relaxation. Stress is terrible for your health in general, and kills your hair directly and can also lead you to coping mechanisms that are damaging for hair (i.e. smoking, drinking, unhealthy food). The reality is that we are all busy and stressed out at least some of the time, so it’s vital that we take some time out to de-stress and center ourselves. Below are three of my favorite ways to disconnect and rejuvenate: Take a spa day: By far my favorite way to unwind is by going to a spa and pampering myself. I have an intense travel and work schedule pretty much year-round, and while I absolutely love what I do, it definitely takes a toll on me. Recently I took a weekend off at Spa Montage at the Montage in Laguna Beach after a particularly busy week. Facials, a detox wrap, a body scrub and a massage are just what the doctor ordered to get me feeling energetic and inspired. I highly recommend this spa for those of you who live in Southern California- it is otherworldly. View outside my hotel room balcony at Montage Laguna- breathtaking, isn’t it? Feeling refreshed and glowing after having spent the entire day at the spa getting facials, scrubs, and massages. Break a sweat: A spa getaway is wonderful, but to de-stress on a daily basis I like to hit the gym. As the saying goes, when your body feels great so does your mind; Working out helps to release endorphins (feel good chemicals in the brain that act as natural pain killers) which improve sleep and reduce stress. If working out at the gym by yourself sounds tedious, shake it up a little by looking to classes. There are so many to choose from that there will definitely be something that motivates you. Some of my favorites are Soul Cycle, Best Butt Ever (at Equinox), and Hot 8 Yoga. Take a hike: One of the things that I adore about living in Southern California is that there are many gorgeous and serene hiking...

Spring Cleaning For Your Hair

Spring Cleaning For Your Hair

Spring is such a magical time in Los Angeles- everywhere you look the tree’s are sprouting flowers as if overnight and the city is filling with so much beautiful color. After weeks of hopping from one plane to the next, I am happy to come home and be witness to the first days of my favorite season in [one of my] favorite cities. The changing of season brings with it a necessity to change your routine and this is even more pertinent for the spring season because we are slowly transitioning from the winter chill to the summer heat. In my years as a Master Hair Colorist I’ve learned that consistently healthy hair means being flexible with your hair care routine so that it matches the demands of the environment. Here are my top tips for how to care for your hair as we transition into the warmer months: Deep condition: It works like clockwork each year, as soon as the weather gets warmer the demand for lighter hair color increases ten-fold. I totally understand wanting sun-kissed strands to match the mood of the season, but going lighter can be taxing for hair if you don’t take the proper steps to ensure hair health- it can leave your hair completely devoid of moisture. I highly recommend deep conditioning your hair often and especially prior to going lighter. The conditioning agents will be present in your cuticle throughout the procedure and will help protect the hair through the lightening process. My favorite product for deep conditioning is the Inphenom Superior Treatment Effect Hair Care Treatment hair mask; it works wonder! I can’t sing the praises of this hair products and this hair care line in general, it’s packaged magic! (DIY hair care tip: Coat your hair- avoiding the roots- with coconut oil and hit the steam room or a heated yoga class. The heat will activate the and work the oil into your strands leaving your hair silky and shiny. Do this once a week). Spring cleaning for your hair: Go through your hair products, toss out all the very heavy products and replace them with light hydrating products- a hydrating shampoo, hydrating daily conditioner, nourishing mast, leave-in spray/cream, light hold mouse, cream or spray. These products are perfect for the hot conditions of the spring/summer months and will not weigh your hair down making it look greasy and hard to style. Hard holding products cause buildup leading you to have to have to shampoo prematurely making your hair (you guessed it!) dry and harder to style. (Hair care fact: Light-hold styling products, more often than not, have anti-humidifying properties). Do you have any questions about products and hair care tips for...

Hot Tools for your Hair

Hot Tools for your Hair

As a Master Hair Colorist I always get question upon question about how to keep hair color looking fresh for as long as possible. The answer is simple: You have to keep your hair healthy! At this point you’re probably wondering, “Renee, I know that healthy hair is key- you’ve pointed that out about a hundred times- what am I supposed to do to keep my hair healthy?” Well, my dears, there are many answers to this question, but the most important one (which is also the topic of today’s blog) is to minimize your use of hot tools such as blow dryers, curling irons, and the worst of them all, flat irons.   If You Must, Use High-Quality Hot Tools If you can’t discontinue using them, then make absolute sure that you are using high-quality hot tools, this is definitely not the area where you want to economize. High-quality hot tools are not only better for your hair, but they will also last a lot longer than their cheap counterparts. I am very picky about the hot tools that I use when I am styling my hair or my clients hair and, after trying many different tools, I have developed a list of go-to’s that I can assure you will not damage your hair. For a blowdryer, my absolute favorite brand is Taiff, the only blowdryer on the market tested for true ionic power. It utilizes both negative ions (neutralizes static electricity and closes hair cuticle making your hair soft and shiny) and positive ions (naturally opens hair cuticle to enhance and absorb the benefits from your hair treatment). Taiff blowdryer is a true game-changer! Bonus Tip: When you are blowdrying your hair make sure that you are pointing the air flow in the direction your hair grows in order to prevent unwanted frizz. My favorite brand for a flat-iron is Ergo because not only is it a truly exceptional hot tool, it also reduces the severe breakage that is common with other flat irons. Ergo flat irons don’t pull your hair which causes it to break at the mid-shaft making your hair dull and weak. Last, but certainly not least, my curling iron of choice is the Hot Tools CeramicTI Tourmaline Curling Iron. This amazing curling iron helps seal the hair cuticle and protects the integrity of the hair and it give you breathtaking curls. Bonus Tip: Do not, under any condition, put hair spray on your hair prior to curling it as it causes serious breakage. Curl each strand and let it cool before you even think about setting it with hair spray. Do you have any hot tools that you swear by and think I...

Renee’s Picks: Hair Products for Under $20

Renee’s Picks: Hair Products for Under $20

The foundation of beautiful color is healthy hair. If you’d like to effortlessly flaunt the luscious locks that you see in the magazines and on television, it’s not impossible! Shine and great hair color begins with taking care of your hair, from root to tip, and also from taking care of yourself! Damaged hair is very brittle, and it needs to be handled with care. Being rough with your hair and using damaging products will cause it to split or break, which will elude to frizziness. Here is one of my favorite products that will give you great hair for under $20! The first step to healthy hair is to revive your hair with a deep condition! I recommend Nioxin Deep Repair Masque. The Deep Repair Masque delivers deep conditioning, manageability and smoothness at an unbelievably low cost. It is a deep treatment that helps provide protection by strengthening the hair shaft against damage and in turn reduces breakage. Here’s how it works:  Intense, lightweight conditioning agents target damaged, dry or color-treated hair, helping to provide protection by strengthening the hair shaft against damage, which reduces breakage. Try this over the weekend and I guarantee you’ll been your way to healthy, shiny, fabulous hair! Happy weekend!
