3 Sun Products That Protect From The Inside Out

More than ever, people are recognizing the importance of sun protection and harmful UV rays. It is the number one source of UV radiation which can lead to different forms of skin cancer. Of course, there are the obvious ways to protect yourself from the sun – wearing a hat, sunglasses, clothing with spf, or staying in the shade. Did you know that the sun can have lasting negative effects on your hair and scalp as well? Sun damage is real when it comes to your tresses. Too much exposure breaks down your hair’s cells and can result in dry, lacklustre locks that will have you feeling dull, flat and tangled. When it comes to sun protection, I have searched high and low for the best ways to protect hair and scalp. Because if anyone who’s ever experienced it, you’ll try almost anything to cool the heat and soothe the sting. Think it’s bad when you burn your shoulders? Your scalp is the very first place the sun hits. You absolutely need the right approach to suncare so that you (and your hair) can shine. Let me illuminate you with some of my favorite ways to protect my hair and skin for catching too many rays. Ready to glow?

SUN SAFETY FIRST

These days, the CDC recommends we get outdoors to the fresh air and keep the immune system up with the most important source of energy for life on Earth, the Sun. Driving with your windows down, walking the dog and scrolling your favorite page, or instagram feed.  Yes, even our screens emit harmful rays that age us. However, just like sun damaged skin, hair that’s been overexposed can definitely show the effects. It’s brittle, dry, frizzy, and more than likely tangly and knotty easily. No one wants that. That’s why it’s crucial you are using an SPF on your hair. I absolutely love this spray from La Roche-Posey because it’s easy-to-use and is a 60 spf. Simply spray it on from head-to-toe and there you go, the sun, your phone, or laptop has no chance. It’s basically like an ice-blended cocktail with one of those paper umbrellas, it’s that refreshing (and much needed). Make this SPF your year round sidekick.

TAKE YOUR VITAMINS

There’s a reason why they always say, “beauty comes from the inside out.” The right nutrients taken internally can really go a long way when you’re looking for beauty benefits. Well, did you know that you can SPF from the inside-out? It’s true, let me tell you more so you’re no longer in the dark. Heliocare Advanced is a dietary supplement that is clinically proven to support skin health and maintain its ability to protect itself from the aging effects of free radicals. Essentially, it’s SPF in pill form. What makes it even better? The antioxidants in the Polypodium leucotomos extract (PLE) help protect against the aging effects of free radicals. Similarly, Heliocare helps your skin protect itself and maintain its youthful look.  It also protects your scalp. I swear by this product and cannot tell you how obsessed I am with these little pills. The other option is to become more vulnerable to the sun’s damaging rays. And reducing much needed time in the sun, that would be a hard pill to swallow. As much as I absolutely love these antioxidant-rich supplements, they shouldn’t replace your topical SPF. Not only does it protect you from the harmful UV rays, sunscreen helps keep your complexion even and prevent visible signs of premature aging. And we can all get on with that.

LET’S FACE IT

There’s no point in masking things, we are living in a very different world right now. Wearing a mask has become the new normal and to be completely honest, I’m all for it. Not only to protect you and your loved ones from COVID-19, but also from the effects of the sun. Not to put a shadow on SPF (because that is absolutely essential in your daily routine), but up to 60% of any sun protection you are putting on your skin can evaporate in direct sunlight. It’s important to apply liberally and reapply throughout the day. That’s why I love these incredible iridescent face shields from NOLI. Level up your mask game with a product that is lightweight, provides SPF 35 protection and looks pretty chic. I love that it fits snugly so I can go for a run without having it slip off. Not only that, it’s a great way to block the haters.

These products are tried and true. No matter what time of year, be sure to keep sun safety top of mind. When your hair and skin are vulnerable to the sun, you could be exposing yourself to more than just a sunburn. Basal Cell Carcinoma is one of the top types of cancers in the United States. Even if you are planning to sit next to a window in the car or on a plane, you can still be exposed to the sun. Make it part of your everyday routine. Don’t worry, I’ve always got you covered. That’s because you’re my SOLmate.
