End of Summer Activities

End of Summer Activities

When we were children perhaps there was no greater excitement and no greater despair than the beginning and end of summer. The season of sun, fun, and no school held adventure and hope and resulted in some of our best memories. Our childhood days are long gone, but the feelings of hope and loss that come and go with summer still remain. Now it’s almost time to say goodbye to summer 2016- it went as fast as it came, in the blink of an eye. However, there are still a few weeks left to make some amazing memories. Below is a list of my favorite summer activities that you must do before the summer officially ends. Road trips: Pull an Elle Woods and take a mini-vacay with your best girlfriends, your one and only, or even by yourself (amazing how much it clears your head). You don’t need to do anything elaborate, it can be just two hours away from where you live. I am blessed to live in Southern California where there is a massive change in landscape just a few hours away from me. My preferred road trip destinations include Big Bear, Lake Arrowhead, Palm Springs, and last but definitely not least, Santa Barbara. I actually have a tradition where I stop by Bacara for a facial and massage. Beach day: So simple, yet somehow so many of us don’t get a chance to hit the beach throughout summer. I love the beach in all its messy glory, sand, blaring sun and all. My absolute favorite place to take a beach day is the Strand in Hermosa Beach. The area is so gorgeous and has some of the most expensive real estate in Southern California. Night pool party: On those warm evenings when the temperature is just right, there is no better (or sexier) place to be than a fun night pool party. If you were wondering what to do with that amazing one piece you bought knowing you’d never wear it, here is your chance to glam it up. I fell in love with night pool parties after attending Night Swim at the Roosevelt Hotel a few years back. No SPF needed! What are the summer activities you are dying to do before summer ends? Hair Myths that Everyone Believes… But They Aren’t True!

Hair Myths that Everyone Believes… But They Aren’t True!

What do these two things have in common: (1) If you have a shot of whatever you were drinking the night before, it will cure your hangover and (2) chocolate causes pimples? If you guessed that both of these statements were myths, old wives tales, if you will- then you are right! Myths are widely circulated ideas that are taken as fact, but they aren’t true. There is no shortage of myths for the hair industry, below are three of the most common ones. Read on and see if you’ve been believing this faulty information for as long as you can remember. Pulling grey hairs causes more: As you are reading this, you are probably having the visual of Sex and the City’s very own Samantha Jones as she frantically discusses the grey hair she found (and plucked) in her pubic region. Rest easy, Ms. Jones, it turns our that this belief is actually a full blown myth. No, plucking a grey hair will not cause three more to grow in it’s place. So, if that’s not the case, is it okay to pluck away? Not exactly! It turns out that continuously pulling on your hair irritates the aggravates the follicle, but it actually has the opposite effect- it can actually lead to bald patches. It is advisable that if you see the grey hairs coming in and you don’t like them, color it (that’s what hair color is for). Dirty hair is better than shampooing: This is a big one that I have been hearing a lot lately and I’ve seen people trying it as well. As it goes, it is true that shampooing your hair too frequently can be damaging and drying for your hair. However, in this case, the polar opposite of that- going weeks without washing- is not the answer to healthy shiny hair. In fact, if you don’t wash your hair for long periods of time it will clog your hair follicle preventing and slowing your hair growth. Try to wash your hair a few times a week, but not everyday, and you will be golden. Coloring your hair is always damaging: I wouldn’t have dedicated my life to being a Master Hair Colorist if the work I was doing was ultimately damaging. Hair color isn’t bad for your hair as long as you are using a demi or a semi-permanent hair-color! You can also prevent damage to your hair when you color by choosing to go darker which actually enables you to maintain more shine on your hair. I also recommend going to a hair colorist who is an expert at their craft so that you know you are in good hands. Are...

City Vibes Through Hair Color

City Vibes Through Hair Color

As many of you know, I do a lot of traveling; in my opinion, traveling is the best education that you can give yourself, and it is quite possibly the only thing you pay for that actually makes you wealthier. I travel a lot for my work as a Master Hair Colorist and try to get away as much as I can when I can take a rare vacation. One of my favorite things about my travels is that each city- with it’s beauty, culture, and nuance- inspires my work. Every single city has a distinct vibe and, being a Master Hair Colorist, I automatically translate that vibe into hair styles and colors. Lately, my mind has been on foreign travels, the feelings I get when I go to the different cities, and what how these feelings translate into hair colors and styles. Below are three cities and what hair colors I associate with them. Paris: Parisian ladies are masters of effortless chic; As a matter of fact, they pretty much define what that means. They are relaxed, easy-going, and confident without trying too hard. As far as hair color is concerned, Paris screams Balayage. Much like the city’s inhabitants, the artistic and intuitive process of creating the perfect Balayage breeds results that look absolutely effortless. When the Balayage is done correctly it should looks like that is how your hair naturally is. Rome: As an Italian I am partial to all things Italy. Italians are known for their unapologetic sex appeal and a high degree of va-va-voom. For me, the hair color that represents Italy is a rich Espresso Brown (almost as rich as the espresso in Italy). Long, voluminous brunette locks reminds me of the confident Italian women whose beauty I grew up admiring. London: My absolute favorite with it’s gothic architecture and gray and dreary days- this is a city with pulse. There is a sense of sophistication in London that I haven’t found anywhere else in the world. When I think of London in terms of hair, I always picture a sleek, Jet Black, and straight- the ultimate sophistication. To pull of this look there definitely needs to be a little bit of fierce attitude and a don’t-mess-with-me demeanor. Which city has your favorite unique style? Curly Hair Hack: How to Reduce Styling Time

Curly Hair Hack: How to Reduce Styling Time

Today’s tips are useful for us all, but they are especially life-changing for the girls with the curls (I promise that was my last attempt at rhyming in this article). Anybody will tell you that curls are absolutely beautiful, buoyant, vibrant and just plain fun, that is anybody will tell you this as long as they don’t have curly hair. I think my curly-haired clients are crazy for thinking the grass-is-greener on the other side, but admittedly it is quite the task to keep curls looking good if you don’t know how to effectively do so. It takes forever to style and is usually susceptible to weather conditions much more so than straight hair. Below are my favorite tips on how to cut styling time in half for all the curly girlies so they can stop stressing and start enjoying their gorgeous hair. When it comes to blowdrying your hair, technique matters: Technique for a blow dry starts with the shampoo, make sure that you aren’t over or under washing your hair because that can be detrimental to your styling experience. After you have washed all the product out of your hair, do a quick cool rinse before you step out of the shower. Next, towel dry your hair gently because harshness and friction will cause your hair to frizz. When applying styling product, make sure that it is distributed evenly throughout your hair. Blow dry from the roots to the ends and make sure the nozzle is pointing downward as this will help minimize frizz. Your conditioner should be so good that it makes you want to sing its praises from rooftops (no exaggeration): I can’t stress the importance of a excellent conditioner enough! If hair is improperly conditioned with a poor product, it will be extremely difficult to style and pretty much impossible to style WELL. Conditioner provides your hair with moisture, makes it easy to brush, and allows it to be more pliable. My absolute favorite is Inphenom’s Superior Treatment Effect– Inphenom is an amazing product line in general, but this product in particular truly embodies the word Superior. A satin pillow case makes all the difference: My curly-haired clients often complain that bed-head as a curly girl is no joke because you wake up to frizzy, tangled, unmanageable hair. Fortunately, there is a simple solution- a satin pillow case! Yes, this may be a splurge, but when you think about the time and headache it saves, you will realize that it’s totally worth it. The satin fabric doesn’t pull your hair as much which eliminates frizz and (bonus) split ends. If you have curls, are there any other tips you recommend for lessening the burden...

Life Hack: Exercises to Help Relax You

Life Hack: Exercises to Help Relax You

These last few weeks I’ve rediscovered the importance of relaxation for your health, well-being and beauty (it’s extremely important for your skin and hair). I think the fact that I was in Hawaii was the catalyst because even though I was there for work, a bit of rest and relaxation is embedded into Hawaiian culture and you can’t help but partake (when in Rome, as the saying goes). I noticed that throughout my time there I was feeling better than ever- more energized, happier, more productive- and I realized that it was 100% necessary to incorporate a little more “me” time into my daily routine. The reality is that I (as I’m sure many of you) am a busy person, so finding that time between work, travel, fitness, and social obligations is a challenge. That’s why it’s vital to get creative, rather than reasoning that I don’t have time began combining two in one: exercise and relaxation. Each week I make the conscious decision to have at least one of my workouts provide me with relaxation benefits as well. Below are my favorite ways to break a sweat, de-stress and relax: Yoga: It should come as a surprise to no-one that yoga is number one on this list. There is nothing more calming for me than going to Hot 8 or Corepower Yoga for a serious sweat session. The benefits of yoga are innumerable- stronger immune system, more focus, clarity, healing for physical and psychological distress- it’s an activity unlike any other. I am a fan of hot yoga (yoga done in a heated room), but there are various methods to choose from- Bikram, hatha, vinyasa flow, and the list goes on. Hiking: I am lucky to live in LA because we have so many amazing hiking trails. My favorite are the ones in Malibu, in particular Los Leones, they are challenging but the reward of that ocean view at the top of the world is priceless. Hiking is a great workout because you are dealing with unpredictable terrain and inclines that demand the use of your full body. I joke with my friend that there is no other activity that will make your booty look quite as good as hiking. I also find that being in nature and breathing the fresh air brings a deep sense of calm to my soul. I generally feel invigorated and extremely present after my hikes which I primarily reserve for Saturday mornings. Infrared Body Wraps: Okay so technically you are just lying down, but these wraps truly do belong on this list because of their benefits. These wraps make you sweat out toxins and mega calories as well as relaxing your overly trained muscles....
