End of Summer Activities

End of Summer Activities

When we were children perhaps there was no greater excitement and no greater despair than the beginning and end of summer. The season of sun, fun, and no school held adventure and hope and resulted in some of our best memories. Our childhood days are long gone, but the feelings of hope and loss that come and go with summer still remain. Now it’s almost time to say goodbye to summer 2016- it went as fast as it came, in the blink of an eye. However, there are still a few weeks left to make some amazing memories. Below is a list of my favorite summer activities that you must do before the summer officially ends. Road trips: Pull an Elle Woods and take a mini-vacay with your best girlfriends, your one and only, or even by yourself (amazing how much it clears your head). You don’t need to do anything elaborate, it can be just two hours away from where you live. I am blessed to live in Southern California where there is a massive change in landscape just a few hours away from me. My preferred road trip destinations include Big Bear, Lake Arrowhead, Palm Springs, and last but definitely not least, Santa Barbara. I actually have a tradition where I stop by Bacara for a facial and massage. Beach day: So simple, yet somehow so many of us don’t get a chance to hit the beach throughout summer. I love the beach in all its messy glory, sand, blaring sun and all. My absolute favorite place to take a beach day is the Strand in Hermosa Beach. The area is so gorgeous and has some of the most expensive real estate in Southern California. Night pool party: On those warm evenings when the temperature is just right, there is no better (or sexier) place to be than a fun night pool party. If you were wondering what to do with that amazing one piece you bought knowing you’d never wear it, here is your chance to glam it up. I fell in love with night pool parties after attending Night Swim at the Roosevelt Hotel a few years back. No SPF needed! What are the summer activities you are dying to do before summer ends? Summer Hair Product Picks

Summer Hair Product Picks

An element that has a profound effect on hair health, appearance, and overall behavior is the weather. The winters cold, for example, doesn’t just make you feel cold, but it also has the tendency to create drier and duller results for your skin and hair. While it doesn’t have the drying effects of winter, the summer heat can be equally frustrating. During summer our hair tends to get oilier faster, can fall victim to humidity, and the sun can seriously damage your hair if you aren’t careful to protect it (a leave-in with SPF or a chic hat are a couple of ways to do this). The best way to go about ensuring that your hair is staying healthy and looking beautiful despite the weather is to be flexible with your hair routine. As a master hair colorist, one piece of advice that I always give my clients is to change up their hair routine with the season. During summer, you naturally want to go for products that are lighter, yet still pack the same dose of nutrient punch for the hair. Below is a list of some of my absolute favorites- the summer hair saviors- as I like to call them. Kérastase Discipline Fluidissime Anti-Frizz Hairspray: I am a huge fan of the Kérastase product line in general, especially this particular product. This is a thermal anti-frizz hairspray making it a great option for styling. It provides amazing control, yet doesn’t give you that sticky and stiff feel that comes along with many other brands of hairspray. It’s double the benefit because it protects your hair from the heat, and actually helps make it easier to blow-dry. Other benefits include mega-watt shine that lasts for up to 72 hours, and it is a strong product for a wide variety of hair types (fine, coarse, or even unmanageable). Sebastian Dry Clean Only Dry Shampoo: Dry shampoo is possibly one of the greatest gifts bestowed upon mankind- if you are a female with long hair, you know that I am not exaggerating. Most of my clients go through bottles very quickly and even faster in summer because the weather makes our hair susceptible to getting oily and our activity levels tend to be higher during the summer. There are so many to pick from, but Dry Clean Only is my absolute favorite because it completely shifts the appearance of hair from drab to a textured and voluminous all while cleansing the hair of impurities. I also love that it’s a spray formula because I find that this makes it easier to use and provides better results. Spray Dry Clean Only on each section of your roots, then make sure to...

Beach Hair, Don’t Care!

Beach Hair, Don’t Care!

I can’t believe that summer 2016 is upon us! This year is flying by so quickly, but I can’t complain because my favorite season is officially a few short weeks away. Whatever your travel plans may be this year, I hope you spend a significant amount of time relaxing at the beach. Not only is it beautiful, but being out in nature (especially by the ocean) is a soul-gratifying experience; Dig your feet into the sand, close your eyes and simply listen to the waves, and you will automatically understand what I mean. There is, however, one inevitable downfall of vacationing by the ocean and in tropical climates: it wreaks havoc on your hair. As you may know if you follow me on Instagram, I have been traveling back and forth to Hawaii for work, and it has given me the opportunity to truly figure out what to do to keep my hair looking picture-ready in tropical weather. Below are my top three tips for how to keep hair looking picture-perfect as you spend your day having fun in the sun: Embrace nature: Lets be honest, no matter what you do, your immaculate blow dry is not going to look so immaculate after a beach day. The air and the wind give you that messy, tousled effect, and as far as I am concerned, the best thing to do is go with the flow- embrace it! Instead of trying to beat the inevitable, use a product that will enhance what is naturally happening. One of my absolute favorite hair products for tropical weather is Bumble and Bumble’s Invisible Oil. This lightweight oils helps detangle and de-frizz beach hair as well as protecting it from sun damage. Braid your hair: Braids are definitely having a moment right now- you don’t have to look any further than Pinterest to see that they are all the rage. I love them because there is a variety of types you can do and it’s a pulled together hairstyle that has longevity. Braids and the beach is like champagne and strawberries- a perfect combination! Loose braids are always better because tight braids pull and damage the hair. I recommend using the Bumble and Bumble Invisible Oil when you put the braid in so that when you brush it out you will be left with gorgeous waves (think of it as two hairstyles in one). Wear a hat: Perhaps the most basic solution of all is to take a chic hat with you wherever you go! Wide brim, cap, fedora- no matter what your style, a hat is a great way to solve your beach hair dilemma. As a bonus, a hat is also the ultimate way...

Five Savvy Tips for protecting your Hair Color this Summer

Five Savvy Tips for protecting your Hair Color this Summer

1.) Hats- Physical protection is preferred over chemical protection when it comes to the sun, so throw on a hat. The wider the brim and thicker the material the better.  My Dermatologist sister Lauren Laurtizten would concur. 2.) Don’t Rush the Brush-  Perfunctory fast brushing of your hair can cause great damage fast.  If you’re on a time budget, drop the brush and save it for when you can mindfully brush- starting from your ends and working your way up the mid shaft finally brushing the root area.  Also, finger rake a leave-in cream EVERYtime you brush your hair.  Get in the habit of keeping your preferred hydrating cream next to your brush this way you won’t forget.  This will act as a lubricant and will make for a snap free brush stroke.  Hair Color can only look as good as its canvas.  Contact me for recommendations if needed, many “leave-in creams” contain high levels of silicone which are terrible for your color.   3.) Bring a jacket if you’re rocking a dress-  The temperature can drop pretty low in the evening and standing under a heat lamp can be enticing.  Stop, and step away from the heat lamps ladies.  These extremely hot lamps cook your outer Cuticular layer of hair- causing the strand to break down and fade your Color.  Don’t be afraid to ask a hottie for his jacket if you forgot yours.   4.) Always keep a hair tie in your handbag-  Summer time is here, and so are the pool parties.  On a hot summer day, a dip in the pool can be a great way cool off but a an even greater way to dry out your hair and dissolve your Color.  Essentially Chlorine is a high oxidizing agent that seeps through the hair into the cortex and washing away color molecules.  The cortex is where the majority of your Hair Color lives and the ONLY person entering your cortex layer of hair should be your Hair Colorist.  If jumping in the pool is a must, put your hair up and avoid going all the way under.   5.) Shower immediately after your workouts-  Summer time equals more skin which equals more time in the gym to tone it.  When you have a heavy cardio day, salt excretes your porous with sweat.  Salt again, breaks down the hair and acts an exfoliant- hence roughing your cuticle layer of hair and loosening your color.  At the very least, rinse your hair immediately after a hard workout class. These tricks are the little things and should be practiced as often as possible for healthy Hair Color that shines all summer long. By Renee Taglia Wella...
