Top Three Hairstyle Trends

Top Three Hairstyle Trends

Nothing brings out a gorgeous hair color like the perfect hair style. The day’s of long waves being the only hair style trend are long gone and in its place are a plethora of hairstyles that range from fun and funky to sexy and sophisticated. Below are a few of my absolute favorites: The Lob: It’s funny when you think about it- what was once written off as the dreaded “in-between” phase is now a full on hair trend. I am loving this look on the likes of Kendall Jenner and Rose Byrne, just to name a few. You can play with your lob cut by switching up the part as both middle part and side part look fantastic. The lob is the biggest trend right now because it allows you to have malleability with your hair and play with the texture by wearing it in lose waves, curls, or stick straight. Braid-waves: For everyone who dreams of those beachy waves no matter what time of year, this look is for you. I am finding that the overall trend’s in hair are veering off of the use of hot tools and leaning toward more natural methods and top-notch products. Case-in point is this hair trend which enables you to ditch the curling iron and achieve those perfect waves all in a nights sleep. Simply braid freshly washed and dried hair prior to going to bed and gently brush out when you wake up in the morning. The final look will resemble something close to this. The Wob: A.K.A. the wavy bob, popularized by none other than Jennifer Lawrence! I love the wob because it is such a deviation away from the stick-straight bob styles we are so used to seeing. This variation is a more lived-in, texturized take on short hair (and the current trends are all about texture). Rocking the wob also gives you an automatic edge and overall cool-girl vibe. I Tried the Vampire Facial

I Tried the Vampire Facial

Those who know me know that I am an absolute nut about skincare. I am extremely particular about what I put in my body because I believe it effects my skin and about skincare. One thing I never skimp on is my monthly facial and I love trying different kinds that come highly recommended. This weekend, I had the opportunity to try the highly acclaimed Vampire Facial and I am absolutely thrilled with the results. Most of you have heard of the Vampire Facial thanks to Kim Kardashian’s mysterious Instagram post. Yes, it got a lot of criticism, but upon reading about how it is done and its benefits, I just had to try it. The Vampire Facial utilizes a tool call a Dermapen containing several  acupuncture-sized needles that get injected into your face. The Vampire Facial uses platelet-rich plasma taken from the patient’s own blood. The platelets stimulate (more like speeds up times ten) collagen and elastin growth. The procedure began with the basics- cleansing, exfoliation, and toning- before beginning the procedure. Don’t let the misleading name fool you, it was virtually painless. It felt like my skin was being completely rejuvenated and renewed and now that it’s been a few days, I know that it has been. My skin has never looked so silky smooth and gorgeous. I haven’t worn a stitch of makeup for the last few days because it makes me sad to cover it up; that, and there is honestly no need to. I was at a friends birthday party over the weekend and was approached by a woman I had never met who told me that my skin looked flawless. She was curious to know which foundation I used and was beyond surprised when I told her that the only makeup I had on my face was  just a dab of translucent powder. I am so excited to see how my skin looks as the days go on because the results are still settling in and I will be sure to post an update then. Have you ever tried the Vampire Facial? How to Make Your Blowout Last

How to Make Your Blowout Last

Nothing has quite the power to make you feel like a bonafide million bucks like a killer blowout. It’s the one little detail that (when set in place just right) can completely transform your day. Below are my tips to help prolong the lifespan of that beautiful blowout just a bit longer. Easy on the products: A lot of product weighs your hair down and the buildup will require you to wash your hair sooner rather than later. My recommendation is to use a light weight de-tangler and leave-in hair conditioner, followed by a light weight shine mist (my favorite is Wella EIMI Glam Mist). These lighter weight products provide your hair the nourishment it needs without the unnecessary burden on your locks. The two rules for sleep: Instead of tying your hair with an elastic band, twist it and pin it atop your head. This tactic will allow you to avoid frizz from your pillow and it will prevent your hair from tangling. Another great tip is to avoid tangling is switch your pillow cases with silk ones- this is a very helpful trick that I learned years ago. For a more cost effective alternative you can gather your hair and tie a silk scarf around it. The two rules for showers: To prolong the lifetime of your blowout keep the shower temperature a little lower and the bathroom fan on while you shower; This will help prevent the steam from frizzing up your hair. Also, as unsexy as this may sound, a shower cap works wonders for keeping your hair protected. Dry shampoo: Dry shampoo truly is our best friend. Once you notice that your hair is beginning to oil up, spray a bit on the roots. Not only does dry shampoo make you look like you just washed your hair, but it also adds a great amount of volume. Add in some curl: As the days go by and kinks start to settle into your not-so-clean hair, I recommend adding some curl with a curling iron. The added texture will help prolong the style so you can wear it out for another day or two. Do you need a recommendation for how to make a blow dry last for your specific hair type? Age-Old Hair Remedy: Castor Oil

Age-Old Hair Remedy: Castor Oil

Everyone  wants longer, healthier hair- there isn’t a single client who sits in my chair that doesn’t. However, for most, the exposure to chemicals and many years of heat styling has made it so that attaining this goal is no easy task. There is one age-old remedy that is said to provide a solution and (surprise!) it’s found in your bathroom drawers: castor oil! Years ago it was recommended to me by my eyebrow lady as a way to help grow them out, so I decided to do a little research. Castor oil has natural antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, a high level of Vitamin E, Omega 6 and 9 fatty acids (the beneficial kind), minerals, and proteins; But what makes it so beneficial for hair and skin is that it is extremely high in ricinoleic acid. Ricinoleic acid is known to balance the pH of the scalp which, in turn, help to replenish its natural oils which are compromised due to heat-styling and chemical-ridden products. Castor oil is an amazing remedy for dandruff, provides moisture for the hair, prevents split ends, and makes hair more luxurious and shinier. Castor oil has a thick consistency so it’s not something that you are going to put into your hair and hit the town. My recommendation is to wait until it is time to wash your hair and use it as a mask by applying the oil to your scalp with your fingers using a circular motion. After you have finished applying the oil, wrap your hair in a warm towel (you can also use a shower cap) and leave it on overnight. If you can’t leave it on for that long of a time, two to eight hours is sufficient. Repeat this process once a week until you have reached your desired result. Top Picks for Hairsprays

Top Picks for Hairsprays

I’m from Chicago and it’s true what they say- it really is the “Windy City.” Naturally, this spells out disaster for your hair as the high impact of heavy wind does not take kindly to long locks. Yes, I am a Master Hair Colorist, but my connoisseur status has developed more out of necessity than my expertise with all things hair-related. Below are my top picks for hairspray’s that get the job done while maintaining the health of your hair. Best for healthy hair: Stylbrid 9 by Sebastian is ideal if you are serious about maintaining hair health. This magnificent product helps bring out the natural shine in your hair and compliments with an additional touch of sleek. It also provides maximum hold and volume all the while protecting your hair from UV and heat. is the perfect primer – for sleek looks with natural shine and hold, defined curls, texture and volume. Best for maximum hold: Elnett Satin Extra Strong Hold Hairspray is an ideal option for strong winds, even the mighty Chicago wind. I love recommending this hairspray to clients who need their hair to hold all day. It is ideal for red carpet events, photo shoots, weddings, etc. Best smelling: For a romantic night when you require your hair to hold, but you also want your hair to smell like heaven, opt for Oribe Hairspray. It’s a lightweight option and it leaves your hair soft (perfect for running your fingers through). It also smells so good that you will want to use it as perfume. Best for every day use: My choice for the practicality and function of your day to day is Sebastian Shaper Plus Hairspray. For all intents and purposes, this hairspray is as classic as it they get. What I love most about is that I actually control the level of volume of my hair when I use it, so it is a versatile option for many hairstyles. It is light-weight and it doesn’t make your hair feel stiff which is wonderful because you don’t have to wash your hair as frequently. What is your favorite hairspray?
