How to Maintain Your Hair While You Sleep

How to Maintain Your Hair While You Sleep

Happy November! I honestly cannot believe how quickly this year has flown by; with the blink of an eye, the holiday season is already upon us. It seems that time has, in actuality, started to speed up which got me thinking how valuable time is and this naturally lead me to how taking too long to style your hair is a nuisance (everything leads back to hair for me- what can I say? I love what I do). Among one of my pet peeves is when you style your hair for the next day right before you go to sleep hoping that it will save you time in the morning. As you may know all too well, this tactic hardly goes as planned. In the interest of saving time (pun intended), I have put together a list that may help you preserve your hard styling work in your slumber — or at least make it easier to style the next morning: Don’t sleep with wet hair: Sleeping with wet hair makes your hair prone to frizz and breakage which makes styling a nightmare. By sleeping with your hair wet you are, without a doubt, adding additional style time to your morning. Elastic bands are a no-no: The elastic will put a dent in your freshly blowdried hair which, even when flat-ironed, often does not regain the original form intended. It may also have the affect of adding volume to the bottom of the hair and flattening the top (basically the opposite of what you want). Use a soft scrunchie in place of the elastic bands for more favorable results. Use a silk or satin pillowcase: These materials are far gentler on your hair and will help prevent breakage unlike traditional pillows which exacerbate breakage. As an alternative you can also wrap your hair in a silk or satin scarf before you go to sleep. Brush your hair before you sleep: Marcia Brady was on to something- brushing your hair after a long day and lots of product will make help maintain hair health, diminish breakage, and keep your hair from being an absolute styling nightmare in the morning. Tips for Hair Growth

Tips for Hair Growth

Who doesn’t want long, luxurious hair? The question I get asked most often by my clients is how they can grow their hair faster. This is tricky because, while it does have to do with your hair grooming methods, what matters most is lifestyle choices and habits. Below are my top three tips for fast hair growth. Eat healthy: A diet filled with Omega-3 fatty acids is essential for aiding the growth of your hair as well as your overall health. Omega-3 fatty acids nourish your hair follicles for stronger and shinier hair. The proper amount of Omega-3 fatty acids will get rid of flaky hair, provide moisture for dry hair, and is even beneficial in preventing hair loss. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in salmon, nuts, chia seeds, and flax seeds. Quit smoking: If there was ever a vice that destroyed the hair smoking is most definitely it! If you talk to anyone who has ever quit smoking they will tell you that among the benefits they received, healthier hair was one of the most noticeable. Smoking constricts your blood vessels, restricting oxygen flow into your scalp, your hair ends up seriously in need of the nutrition that it’s not getting; the result of this is dry, brittle hair. There are also studies showing that smoking is connected to premature graying and hair loss. Take Viviscal: I swear by this product and have taken it myself as well as recommended it to many of my clients. Viviscal is a vitamin supplement that provides the hair with nourishment from within to help it grow. It does this by providing your hair with the nutrients it needs to prolong the anagen (hair growth) phase of your hair growth cycle. If you have been looking to take supplement definitely give Viviscal a try. Have a specific question about how to promote hair growth? Age-Old Hair Remedy: Beer Hair-Care!

Age-Old Hair Remedy: Beer Hair-Care!

I love hearing about wacky hair-care remedies, new and old. Today’s is a classic and what better day to talk about this than on the weekend of Oktoberfest? As you may have guessed, the hair-care remedy that I am  referring to is beer. Believe it or not, beer hair-care treatments are a thing. The logic behind this remedy is that the elements that create the composition of beer can help your hair feel voluminous and shiny. So, this remedy is a God-send for people who have limp and fine hair.  The nutrients found in beer are said to repair dry, damaged hair bringing it back to its healthiest state. The malt and hops in the beer are filled with protein which binds to hair and restores its strength. And talk about a vitamin boost- the alcohol in beer contains B vitamins which tighten the cuticles of hair and restore shine. If you are intrigued by this age-old remedy, you’ll be happy to hear that it’s fairly easy to try. All you have to do is get into the shower with a bottle of your favorite brewski, wash and condition your hair as you regularly do, saturate your hair in beer, let it sit for few minutes, rinse your hair, and voila! Another, less boozy option is to mix a quarter cup of water, quarter cup of apple cider vinegar, and a quarter cup of beer to make a beer hair-care cocktail of sorts. Once again, after you’ve concluded your usual shampoo and condition routine, pour the concoction over your hair and let sit for a few minutes before a final rinse. The apple cider vinegar will cut the smell of the beer (which has the potential to make a DUI checkpoint a living nightmare). In addition to helping your hair attain volume and adding shine, the apple cider vinegar will also help remove product buildup. It is recommended to repeat the treatment twice a month for best results. Have you ever tried a beer hair-care treatment? Did you love it or hate it? Age-Old Hair Remedy: Castor Oil

Age-Old Hair Remedy: Castor Oil

Everyone  wants longer, healthier hair- there isn’t a single client who sits in my chair that doesn’t. However, for most, the exposure to chemicals and many years of heat styling has made it so that attaining this goal is no easy task. There is one age-old remedy that is said to provide a solution and (surprise!) it’s found in your bathroom drawers: castor oil! Years ago it was recommended to me by my eyebrow lady as a way to help grow them out, so I decided to do a little research. Castor oil has natural antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, a high level of Vitamin E, Omega 6 and 9 fatty acids (the beneficial kind), minerals, and proteins; But what makes it so beneficial for hair and skin is that it is extremely high in ricinoleic acid. Ricinoleic acid is known to balance the pH of the scalp which, in turn, help to replenish its natural oils which are compromised due to heat-styling and chemical-ridden products. Castor oil is an amazing remedy for dandruff, provides moisture for the hair, prevents split ends, and makes hair more luxurious and shinier. Castor oil has a thick consistency so it’s not something that you are going to put into your hair and hit the town. My recommendation is to wait until it is time to wash your hair and use it as a mask by applying the oil to your scalp with your fingers using a circular motion. After you have finished applying the oil, wrap your hair in a warm towel (you can also use a shower cap) and leave it on overnight. If you can’t leave it on for that long of a time, two to eight hours is sufficient. Repeat this process once a week until you have reached your desired result. Summer Hair Product Picks

Summer Hair Product Picks

An element that has a profound effect on hair health, appearance, and overall behavior is the weather. The winters cold, for example, doesn’t just make you feel cold, but it also has the tendency to create drier and duller results for your skin and hair. While it doesn’t have the drying effects of winter, the summer heat can be equally frustrating. During summer our hair tends to get oilier faster, can fall victim to humidity, and the sun can seriously damage your hair if you aren’t careful to protect it (a leave-in with SPF or a chic hat are a couple of ways to do this). The best way to go about ensuring that your hair is staying healthy and looking beautiful despite the weather is to be flexible with your hair routine. As a master hair colorist, one piece of advice that I always give my clients is to change up their hair routine with the season. During summer, you naturally want to go for products that are lighter, yet still pack the same dose of nutrient punch for the hair. Below is a list of some of my absolute favorites- the summer hair saviors- as I like to call them. Kérastase Discipline Fluidissime Anti-Frizz Hairspray: I am a huge fan of the Kérastase product line in general, especially this particular product. This is a thermal anti-frizz hairspray making it a great option for styling. It provides amazing control, yet doesn’t give you that sticky and stiff feel that comes along with many other brands of hairspray. It’s double the benefit because it protects your hair from the heat, and actually helps make it easier to blow-dry. Other benefits include mega-watt shine that lasts for up to 72 hours, and it is a strong product for a wide variety of hair types (fine, coarse, or even unmanageable). Sebastian Dry Clean Only Dry Shampoo: Dry shampoo is possibly one of the greatest gifts bestowed upon mankind- if you are a female with long hair, you know that I am not exaggerating. Most of my clients go through bottles very quickly and even faster in summer because the weather makes our hair susceptible to getting oily and our activity levels tend to be higher during the summer. There are so many to pick from, but Dry Clean Only is my absolute favorite because it completely shifts the appearance of hair from drab to a textured and voluminous all while cleansing the hair of impurities. I also love that it’s a spray formula because I find that this makes it easier to use and provides better results. Spray Dry Clean Only on each section of your roots, then make sure to...
