Summer Hair Product Picks

An element that has a profound effect on hair health, appearance, and overall behavior is the weather. The winters cold, for example, doesn’t just make you feel cold, but it also has the tendency to create drier and duller results for your skin and hair. While it doesn’t have the drying effects of winter, the summer heat can be equally frustrating. During summer our hair tends to get oilier faster, can fall victim to humidity, and the sun can seriously damage your hair if you aren’t careful to protect it (a leave-in with SPF or a chic hat are a couple of ways to do this). The best way to go about ensuring that your hair is staying healthy and looking beautiful despite the weather is to be flexible with your hair routine. As a master hair colorist, one piece of advice that I always give my clients is to change up their hair routine with the season. During summer, you naturally want to go for products that are lighter, yet still pack the same dose of nutrient punch for the hair. Below is a list of some of my absolute favorites- the summer hair saviors- as I like to call them. Kérastase Discipline Fluidissime Anti-Frizz Hairspray: I am a huge fan of the Kérastase product line in general, especially this particular product. This is a thermal anti-frizz hairspray making it a great option for styling. It provides amazing control, yet doesn’t give you that sticky and stiff feel that comes along with many other brands of hairspray. It’s double the benefit because it protects your hair from the heat, and actually helps make it easier to blow-dry. Other benefits include mega-watt shine that lasts for up to 72 hours, and it is a strong product for a wide variety of hair types (fine, coarse, or even unmanageable). Sebastian Dry Clean Only Dry Shampoo: Dry shampoo is possibly one of the greatest gifts bestowed upon mankind- if you are a female with long hair, you know that I am not exaggerating. Most of my clients go through bottles very quickly and even faster in summer because the weather makes our hair susceptible to getting oily and our activity levels tend to be higher during the summer. There are so many to pick from, but Dry Clean Only is my absolute favorite because it completely shifts the appearance of hair from drab to a textured and voluminous all while cleansing the hair of impurities. I also love that it’s a spray formula because I find that this makes it easier to use and provides better results. Spray Dry Clean Only on each section of your roots, then make sure to...

Spring Cleaning For Your Hair

Spring Cleaning For Your Hair

Spring is such a magical time in Los Angeles- everywhere you look the tree’s are sprouting flowers as if overnight and the city is filling with so much beautiful color. After weeks of hopping from one plane to the next, I am happy to come home and be witness to the first days of my favorite season in [one of my] favorite cities. The changing of season brings with it a necessity to change your routine and this is even more pertinent for the spring season because we are slowly transitioning from the winter chill to the summer heat. In my years as a Master Hair Colorist I’ve learned that consistently healthy hair means being flexible with your hair care routine so that it matches the demands of the environment. Here are my top tips for how to care for your hair as we transition into the warmer months: Deep condition: It works like clockwork each year, as soon as the weather gets warmer the demand for lighter hair color increases ten-fold. I totally understand wanting sun-kissed strands to match the mood of the season, but going lighter can be taxing for hair if you don’t take the proper steps to ensure hair health- it can leave your hair completely devoid of moisture. I highly recommend deep conditioning your hair often and especially prior to going lighter. The conditioning agents will be present in your cuticle throughout the procedure and will help protect the hair through the lightening process. My favorite product for deep conditioning is the Inphenom Superior Treatment Effect Hair Care Treatment hair mask; it works wonder! I can’t sing the praises of this hair products and this hair care line in general, it’s packaged magic! (DIY hair care tip: Coat your hair- avoiding the roots- with coconut oil and hit the steam room or a heated yoga class. The heat will activate the and work the oil into your strands leaving your hair silky and shiny. Do this once a week). Spring cleaning for your hair: Go through your hair products, toss out all the very heavy products and replace them with light hydrating products- a hydrating shampoo, hydrating daily conditioner, nourishing mast, leave-in spray/cream, light hold mouse, cream or spray. These products are perfect for the hot conditions of the spring/summer months and will not weigh your hair down making it look greasy and hard to style. Hard holding products cause buildup leading you to have to have to shampoo prematurely making your hair (you guessed it!) dry and harder to style. (Hair care fact: Light-hold styling products, more often than not, have anti-humidifying properties). Do you have any questions about products and hair care tips for...

Five Savvy Tips for protecting your Hair Color this Summer

Five Savvy Tips for protecting your Hair Color this Summer

1.) Hats- Physical protection is preferred over chemical protection when it comes to the sun, so throw on a hat. The wider the brim and thicker the material the better.  My Dermatologist sister Lauren Laurtizten would concur. 2.) Don’t Rush the Brush-  Perfunctory fast brushing of your hair can cause great damage fast.  If you’re on a time budget, drop the brush and save it for when you can mindfully brush- starting from your ends and working your way up the mid shaft finally brushing the root area.  Also, finger rake a leave-in cream EVERYtime you brush your hair.  Get in the habit of keeping your preferred hydrating cream next to your brush this way you won’t forget.  This will act as a lubricant and will make for a snap free brush stroke.  Hair Color can only look as good as its canvas.  Contact me for recommendations if needed, many “leave-in creams” contain high levels of silicone which are terrible for your color.   3.) Bring a jacket if you’re rocking a dress-  The temperature can drop pretty low in the evening and standing under a heat lamp can be enticing.  Stop, and step away from the heat lamps ladies.  These extremely hot lamps cook your outer Cuticular layer of hair- causing the strand to break down and fade your Color.  Don’t be afraid to ask a hottie for his jacket if you forgot yours.   4.) Always keep a hair tie in your handbag-  Summer time is here, and so are the pool parties.  On a hot summer day, a dip in the pool can be a great way cool off but a an even greater way to dry out your hair and dissolve your Color.  Essentially Chlorine is a high oxidizing agent that seeps through the hair into the cortex and washing away color molecules.  The cortex is where the majority of your Hair Color lives and the ONLY person entering your cortex layer of hair should be your Hair Colorist.  If jumping in the pool is a must, put your hair up and avoid going all the way under.   5.) Shower immediately after your workouts-  Summer time equals more skin which equals more time in the gym to tone it.  When you have a heavy cardio day, salt excretes your porous with sweat.  Salt again, breaks down the hair and acts an exfoliant- hence roughing your cuticle layer of hair and loosening your color.  At the very least, rinse your hair immediately after a hard workout class. These tricks are the little things and should be practiced as often as possible for healthy Hair Color that shines all summer long. By Renee Taglia Wella...
