Predictions for Most Popular Halloween Looks 2015

Predictions for Most Popular Halloween Looks 2015

Halloween is a day away! If you’ve been keeping up with the blog, you know that the Master Hair Colorist in me loves any day that requires a little dress up. I have already talked about my favorite looks of years past, but what about this year? Each year brings with it a new set of trends which means that there will be a whole new set of popular costumes. I have a feeling that the following three are going to be making a massive appearance for Halloween 2015. “Suicide Squad” isn’t even out yet, but it has garnered a lot of buzz. The buzz isn’t just for the movie, however, it’s also for the killer transformations of the leading stars (Google: Jared Leto Joker to see what I mean). Margot Robbie’s transformation into Harley Quinn is so fun and I am predicting that it will be the most emulated movie character this year. The costume and makeup is fun, but you know my main focus is her amazing hair color! Harley Quinn’s hair is totally on trend with the cotton candy pink hair color on one end and the blue hair color on the other. You can get this look with a temporary hair color and, because it lasts about 10 washes, you can rock it for a week or two after. I honestly don’t know how Kate Moss as Morticia Addams happened to get past me for my Favorite Halloween Looks (Celeb Edition), but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Addams Family matriarch is everywhere on Halloween. Earlier this year a photo was released of Christina Ricci (who portrayed Wednesday Addams in the Addams Family movies) dressed as Morticia and she looked fierce! I am sure many people (including me) were inspired to don their sexiest long black dress, do their hair color jet black and head out on the town. The jet black hair color and the long straight locks are essential no matter what female member of the Addams Family you are going to be this year. This list would not be complete without the go-to for those who wait until the last minute to pick out their Halloween costume: The Black Cat. After all, we all have the obligatory all black outfit in our closet and what better excuse to go all out with a dramatic cat eye? Renee Taglia is located in a Beverly Hills California. Keep Your Hair Color Vibrant and Healthy in Cold Weather

Keep Your Hair Color Vibrant and Healthy in Cold Weather

October flew by in the blink of an eye and pretty soon the weather is going to go from chilly to full on winter. As a Chicago native I truly appreciate the winter cold and the merriment it brings with it. However, as a Master Hair Colorist I dread it because it wreaks absolute havoc on hair color vibrancy and hair health overall. Hair tends to get frigid and dry in these months and because most people don’t know the subtle nuances of proper hair care their hair color ends up looking quite dull. Today, we are going to discuss my favorite hair color and hair health savers for the colder months. These are tips that I have picked up in my years as a Master Hair Colorist and that I impart to every single one of my personal clients. Follow these tips and your hair will think that it is still summer! 1.I know that you treasure your hot showers (especially in the winter months), but showering in hot water is not the best for hair color vibrancy and hair health. One trick of the trade (and a nice little compromise) is to do a cool rinse at the end of the shower to flatten the cuticle. The flatter the cuticle the shinier your hair color will be and it will help maintain hair health. 2. I don’t know how to convey in words how upset I get when I see someone drying their hair by putting the blowdryer directly on their hair. Any Master Hair Colorist will tell you that this is among the habits that irks them the most. Using the blowdryer directly on the hair makes the hair color look lifeless and kills hair health. Pull the blow dryer at least six inches away from your hair when blowdrying and always use a nozzle for air flow control. 3. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but heat lamps erode and break down the cuticle cells of your hair. Stay away from them by bringing a jacket with you when you go out for the night to outdoor lounges or restaurants. Renee Taglia is located in a Beverly Hills California. Master Hair Colorists Picks for Best Halloween Looks (Celebrity Edition)

Master Hair Colorists Picks for Best Halloween Looks (Celebrity Edition)

As a Master Hair Colorist, I am pretty much obsessed with Halloween (any excuse for dressing up and I am all about it). That being said, my next few posts are going to be extremely Halloween-centric. As I try to find inspiration for my own costume, I keep looking through tons of pictures of celebrities costumes from past Halloween’s. Every year, we see our favorite TV, film, and music stars put together some pretty interesting Halloween looks. As I mentioned in my last post, I believe that the best Halloween costumes come from fully committing to the look – this includes costume, makeup, and the HAIR! Of course, as a Master Hair Colorist,  my prerequisite for an amazing Halloween look is how well the hair color and style coordinate with the costume. You’d be surprised how much I am completely unimpressed by the effort people put into having the hair color and hair style be on point for the costumes. There are times, however, when I find a person who has truly done a spectacular job with their hair color and hair style. So, without further ado, I bring you my Top Three Halloween Looks (Celebrity Edition)! Iggy Azaelea knocked it out of the park as one of our all-time favorite Disney villains, Cruella De Vil. Not only did she pull this off to perfection, but she also modernized Cruella’s wardrobe and truly committed to Cruella’s signature black and white hair color and hair style. Perfectly coiffed and with a dalmatian to boot- I can’t really ask for more. Heidi Klum is the queen of Halloween looks! Each year, she throws an elaborate Halloween party where she truly is costumed to perfection. Cleopatra may be a typical Halloween costume, but nobody does its quite like Heidi. She even bedazzled her face to embody how much of an absolute goddess and myth Cleopatra has become in modern day. I have never seen anyone do Cleopatra quite like this! I really tried to find another person for the third spot, but once again I have to give to Heidi Klum (or should I say Betty Boop?) I love that instead of opting for a plain, black bob, she actually created a awesome hair color and hair style for her version of Betty Boop. I think even Betty Boop would approve. I can’t wait to see what Heidi has up her sleeve this year! What are your favorite Halloween looks? Let me know in the comments below. Renee Taglia is located in a Beverly Hills California. Up Level Halloween with Temporary Hair Color

Up Level Halloween with Temporary Hair Color

It’s almost the end of October and that means one thing: Halloween! I have always loved Halloween, but even more so since becoming a master hair colorist. You see, as a master hair colorist, I love creating and witnessing transformations which Halloween is all about. My heart skips a few beats when someone wholeheartedly commits to this night of make-believe and mayhem by going all out with their costume, not overlooking a single detail. Of course, “not overlooking a single detail,” means you need your hair color to come into the mix as well. You can’t be on point about your costume and makeup, but completely overlook the most important factor in how you look: your hair. Nasty wigs don’t cut it these days because they destroy the integrity of the costume (as you have probably gathered, I take Halloween pretty seriously). I know that it’s hard to commit to a hair color 180 for just one night. I mean, being a flamingo for Halloween is great, but you don’t want to be one the other 364 days of the year. This year, I have a beautiful solution for you: Temporary Hair Color. A completely safe alternative that disappears after you 5-15 washes. I highly recommend it for those of you who truly want to play this Halloween. Below I’ve listed three things that make Temporary Hair Color awesome: Its temporary!!! Forgive me for being obvious, but I just don’t see a bigger benefit. Temporary Hair Color opens up a whole new world because the number of costumes you can truly pull off expands x 100! You want to be Katy Perry for Halloween? Well, nothing says Katy Perry more than hair color so bright it rivals My Little Pony. Think you’d make a perfect Wednesday Addams? Wednesday isn’t Wednesday without hair color that is darker black than the darkest night. Keeping it low key and just going as a cat or lion? Up-level that costume by making your hair color the same as the animals main! I can go on, but I think you get the point. (My stunning model, @vividvivka, from a recent shoot) Temporary Hair Color will not effect the hair color beneath it. I would never make a recommendation that would damage the health of your hair and dull your hair color. Temporary hair color live outside the cuticular layer of your hair and last about 5-15 washes. (A look you may recognize if you follow me on Instagram – if you don’t you should start, @reneetaglia – how cool would this be for Halloween night?!) This isn’t just for Halloween, Temporary Hair Color is wonderful for those of you who have been dying to try out...

Three Benefits of the Keratin Hair Treatment

Three Benefits of the Keratin Hair Treatment

Easy to style, silky hair is one of the most coveted desires for many women. We all want to walk down the street while our beautiful, easy, breezy hair flows just perfectly in the wind. Unfortunately, this is the farthest thing from our hair reality. We have to resort to over-styling, putting too much product, and generally stressing out way too much over our hair. It takes up too much time, annoyance, and mental energy. For the ladies who feel like they practically sleep with the flat-iron in their hand, I highly recommend getting a Keratin treatment. It will change your life – trust me! On an episode of AOL’s Hairapy, I performed a Keratin treatment on Bethel, whose unruly hair was driving her crazy. Watch the video to see the gorgeous results then read on for the Top Three Benefits of the Keratin Hair Treatment. The Keratin Hair Treatment reduces styling time which is beneficial on a practical level, but also great for your hair. Imagine not having to put aside a huge chunk of time for your hair to look decent. Sounds like heaven, doesn’t it? While this is a huge perk, what is even better is that the less you expose your hair to heat the healthier your hair will be. The Keratin Treatment enables you to give your hair a break from heavy duty styling. Keratin is naturally found in your hair. Unlike the Japanese Hair Straightening Treatment it doesn’t change the internal structure of you hair to get it super straight. So what does it do? It works with the natural structure of your hair to ease the curl and get rid of the frizz. In short, it turns your hair into the best version of itself. You will not be victim to the whims of mother nature. Yes, you heard right! Your hair will not poof up in humid weather, nor will you have to run and hide from the slightest drizzle because you are afraid your hair will tangle and become unruly. For four to six blissful months you can experience the entire spectrum of weather without worrying about your hair looking terrible. Renee Taglia is located in a Beverly Hills California. A Master Hair Colorist’s Top Three Tips for Restoring Hair Color and Health

As a Master Hair Colorist there is one thing that I see more often than anything else: chemically treated, damaged hair. So many of the ladies who come in for hair color consultations are wary and traumatized from a previous hair color and/or treatment experience. The story usually goes a little something like this: “I have unruly hair to begin with and I really wanted it straight on a daily basis so I did one chemical straightening treatment too many.” Another common tale, “I had black hair and needed to be blonde ASAP so I over bleached,” and it goes on and on. Can you relate? I know most of you can! If you want healthy hair and gorgeous hair color that pops long after your salon visit, you need to start treating your hair like the living organism that it is (with the utmost care and respect!) This means being patient with drastic hair color changes, buying good, chemical-free hair care products, and being kind when styling your hair (don’t pull it, don’t brush too harshly). Below is an episode of the AOL’s Hairapy in which I had to avert a chemically treated disaster. Watch the episode below then read on for my Top Three Tips on How to Heal a Hair Disaster: Nix the flat-iron. Heat styling depletes the moisture from your hair and the biggest culprit of heat-induced damage is the flat-iron. It causes breakage, split-ends, and ultimately results in faded hair color and a dull appearance for you hair. For many staying away from the flat-iron is easier said than done, but, as a master hair colorist, I strongly advise that you try to (at least) reduce flat-iron use. Stick to blowdrying or even the curling iron, but even then use a good thermal spray to protect your hair. Deep conditioning treatments are your best friend. Regular deep conditioning treatments are an absolute must to nurse chemically damaged hair back to health. I recommend going to the salon one to two times a month. If you are seeking an at-home solution, try using coconut oil. Slather your hair with coconut oil (avoid roots, concentrate on tips) and leave it on for about an hour before you rinse. It will leave your hair feeling silky and your hair color shiny. Bonus points for hitting the sauna or a hot yoga class with the coconut oil in your hair as heat activates the coconut oil to work its magic on an even deeper level. Go for trims every four to six weeks. It’s funny how the most basic advice that we have been hearing since we were little kids is the most valid of all. Trimming your hair...

Three Tips for Instantly Healthy Hair Using Hair Color

Three Tips for Instantly Healthy Hair Using Hair Color

Last week was the conclusion of my blog series, Master Colorist’s Fall 2015 Hair Color Trend Forecast. This was a bittersweet event for me because I can talk about hair color trends all day, however, I am just as excited today to introduce a video series that I loved being a part of: AOL’s HAIRapy! I loved doing this series for a many reasons, but the fact that I got to give knowledge about hair care and use what I have learned in all my years as a Master Hair Colorist to help others takes the cake. There is nothing more satisfying than turning that chair around and witnessing a look of complete happiness on my clients face. In this episode, our lovely guest, Carole, is facing a problem that is all too common among women today: She simply does not have the means to touch up her hair color every six to eight weeks, so she resorts to doing her hair color herself. As a result, her hair is in a state of complete disarray. Carole certainly isn’t alone as this might just be the most common predicament hair colorist’s hear on the daily. The good news is that there are a few simple hair color tricks and hair care methods you can incorporate that will make your hair look healthier instantly and buy you time in between visits to the hair salon. Watch the video below then read my Three Tips for Instantly Healthier Hair Using Hair Color: It might seem counterintuitive, but a fresh hair color treatment (with a hair colorist who knows his/her stuff, of course) is actually a great solution. Adding color molecules to your hair gives hair structure and makes hair look healthier than it is. Keep it low maintenance by working with your natural hair color. If you know that it is going to be difficult for you to touch up your hair color due to schedule, finances, etc, you definitely want to stick to a color that works with your natural tones. This is great because it enhances what you already have and allows you to spend the time in between salon visits paying more attention to making your hair healthy rather than maintaining the hair color. Make sure to voice this to your hair colorist the minute you sit in the chair. Gloss treatments don’t just give hair shine, they actually improve the health of your hair. The gloss acts as an instant deep condition by return texture to your hair for instant moisture and silkiness. It also helps make hair more manageable so you’ll have to spend less time tampering with hot tools at home. Bonus: Intermittent gloss treatments...

Master Colorist’s Fall Hair Color Trend Forecast Vol. Four

Master Colorist’s Fall Hair Color Trend Forecast Vol. Four

Happy Wednesday, beauties! This is the the fourth and final edition of my Fall 2015 Hair Color Trend Forecast. There is no better way to end this list of hot hair colors for the colder month’s than with the cheeriest trend of them all: Pastels. Pastel hair color (or as it is sometimes referred to, “Mermaid Hair Color”) was very popular throughout the Spring/Summer months and has successfully transitioned to the cooler season. Unsurprisingly, people are just not ready to let this fun trend go away quite yet. We watched celebrities and influencers create their versions of this candy hair color; some famous fans of this hair color trend include Kylie Jenner who has been seen rocking a gorgeous sea-foam green, Julianne Hough, and Katy Perry, just to name a few. (Kylie Jenner) The thing I love about the progression of pastel hair color is that it has managed to go from a funky trend to a refined style statement. People are creating beautiful, elegant looks with a rainbow of these stunning hair colors. Pastels are without a doubt one of the most desired looks from my more daring, trendy clients and (unsurprisingly) one of my favorites to create. The most popular pastel hair color shades are sea-foam green, cotton candy pink, and midnight sky blue. My favorite way to execute pastel hair color is by working with a few colors at once. Instead of doing one shade all over, I work with multiple shades to give each clients hair a little touch of something extra. Of course, like all other hair color compositions, the pastel shades chosen for each individual client need to compliment the undertones of the skin as well as the eye color. By going to a qualified master hair colorist who mixes hair color shades with precision and understands the nuances of how hair color plays with natural undertones, you can achieve a pastel hair color so gorgeous that it would make a mermaid jealous. Below are a few Pastel Hair Color looks that I created for my clients. (@colbiejae) (@autumntuesdays) (@vividvivka) (@hardcoreliz) I’d love to hear from you: Which one of the Fall 2015 Hair Color Trends is your favorite? Let me know in the comments below. Master Colorist’s Fall Hair Color Trend Forecast Vol. Three

Master Colorist’s Fall Hair Color Trend Forecast Vol. Three

Hello lovelies, the third hair color trend for Fall 2015 is extremely vibrant and perhaps the most Fall-forward hair color of all: Rusted Red. This year’s reds come in an array of gorgeous, customizable shades. Rusted Red is the rarest of all hair colors so it is very much a head turner if formulated correctly. Unfortunately, it is also a hair color that has gotten a bad reputation over the years because many hair colorists do not know how to properly formulate this hair color for each individual. I remember a client telling me she hated red because it brought out the yellow undertones in her skin to a jarring point. She had to change her entire makeup routine, including foundation, because nothing she owned matched how “yellow” her skin looked. I felt terrible for this client because going to the salon to get your hair color updated should be fun and leave you feeling sexy and confident. As a master hair colorist, it is top priority for me that my clients leave my chair feeling like they can take on the world. If you want to try the Rusted Red hair color trend for Fall 2015 I highly recommend it. Don’t let your decision be dictated by a bad experience that you have had in the past. The important thing you can do to avoid another mishap is to find a hair colorist who understands the nature of formulating Rusted Red for individual skin tones. Rusted Red is definitely not a one-size-fits-all hair color. Rusted Reds include Copper Red, Red Brown and Red Violet, a hair color range large enough that it allows 100% customization for a wide array of skin tones. When a hair colorist formulates it properly Rusted Red has the potential to enliven your skin by giving you a youthful appearance, brightening your eye color, and giving the hair itself incredible shine. Check out the photos below to see some of my most recent Rusted Red clients:  Model: @missmaddog Model: @hipstercalligraphy Renee Taglia is located in a Beverly Hills California. Master Colorist’s Fall Hair Color Trend Forecast Vol. Two

Master Colorist’s Fall Hair Color Trend Forecast Vol. Two

Happy Friday, beauties! I am so excited to announce that my article for Bullett Media was released last night! I’ve been dying to share it with all of you, so naturally, I was one happy lady this morning when I discovered that it was up. Check it out and leave any comments or questions in the comments section. Two days ago we officially crossed the threshold into full on autumn, so I am especially excited to be revealing the second Hot Hair Color Trend of the season: Buttery Blonde! Lets face it, blonde seems to be a permanently coveted hair color, but this seasons blonde shades are the sexiest yet. As a master hair colorist, I am accustomed to clients of all hair color and type wanting to go blonde, but being afraid of the final result. A little known fact among our community of master hair colorists is this: there is a shade of blonde for absolutely everybody. The key is to understand how to mix a hair color with various shades to compliment the undertones in the skin. Below are a few models that I turned into golden goddesses. As you can see, there is a huge difference in the complexion of the models and each is rocking the shade of blonde that compliments her distinct features. My model, Kelleen Chea (@kelleenchea) has a gorgeous, naturally tan complexion. In order to perfectly compliment the undertones in her skin, I created a hair color mixture that (while still beautifully blonde) is on the darker side with slight hints of caramel. This hair color mixture gives Kelleen a expressive, fresh new look. Liv (@liv_jaegaer) is the quintessential blonde bombshell. The undertones in her skin and her light eyes give her the complexion for the beach-y blonde locks. For fall, I created a hair color mixture that would create a warm glow around her face and bring out her beautiful blue eyes. I was one of the master colorists who had the pleasure of getting creative with Nioxin color for the Sebastian What Next Awards. I created Buttery Blonde hair color looks for both of my gorgeous models. As you may have noticed, the shades for them are very different from the hair color shades for  Kelleen and Liv, yet they all exist within the blonde family. The hair color shades for the event were on the cooler side, and there is distinction between the shade for each model according to her complexion. On the first model (@dexrockwell) I mixed a rose-gold hair color shade, while the hair color shade on the second model (@misscharlotta) was the coolest and most platinum of all. I’d love to hear from you: Have you...
