Hair Myths that Everyone Believes… But They Aren’t True!

What do these two things have in common: (1) If you have a shot of whatever you were drinking the night before, it will cure your hangover and (2) chocolate causes pimples? If you guessed that both of these statements were myths, old wives tales, if you will- then you are right! Myths are widely circulated ideas that are taken as fact, but they aren’t true. There is no shortage of myths for the hair industry, below are three of the most common ones. Read on and see if you’ve been believing this faulty information for as long as you can remember. Pulling grey hairs causes more: As you are reading this, you are probably having the visual of Sex and the City’s very own Samantha Jones as she frantically discusses the grey hair she found (and plucked) in her pubic region. Rest easy, Ms. Jones, it turns our that this belief is actually a full blown myth. No, plucking a grey hair will not cause three more to grow in it’s place. So, if that’s not the case, is it okay to pluck away? Not exactly! It turns out that continuously pulling on your hair irritates the aggravates the follicle, but it actually has the opposite effect- it can actually lead to bald patches. It is advisable that if you see the grey hairs coming in and you don’t like them, color it (that’s what hair color is for). Dirty hair is better than shampooing: This is a big one that I have been hearing a lot lately and I’ve seen people trying it as well. As it goes, it is true that shampooing your hair too frequently can be damaging and drying for your hair. However, in this case, the polar opposite of that- going weeks without washing- is not the answer to healthy shiny hair. In fact, if you don’t wash your hair for long periods of time it will clog your hair follicle preventing and slowing your hair growth. Try to wash your hair a few times a week, but not everyday, and you will be golden. Coloring your hair is always damaging: I wouldn’t have dedicated my life to being a Master Hair Colorist if the work I was doing was ultimately damaging. Hair color isn’t bad for your hair as long as you are using a demi or a semi-permanent hair-color! You can also prevent damage to your hair when you color by choosing to go darker which actually enables you to maintain more shine on your hair. There are very few things in this life that can be taken as indisputable fact, but there is one thing that we all know cannot be questioned: There’s nothing quite like a great blow-out to make you feel like a million bucks. Perhaps this is the reason that Dry Bar (and the countless copycats that have sprang up throughout the years) are so popular! Ever wonder how it is that they seem to have the Art of the Blow-dry down to a tee? How they make it look so easy? If you’ve ever wished that you could have a beautiful blowout at all times, this article is for you – below are my professional tips on achieving The Perfect Blow-dry every single time: The perfect blow-dry starts far before you start blow-drying your hair; As a matter of fact, the process starts with the shower. It goes without saying that you should be using high quality products on your hair- a good shampoo and conditioner is a must! Be reasonable with the amount of both products you use, rinse well, and when you apply conditioner make sure to keep it primarily on the shaft and tips rather than the roots. Prior to stepping out of the shower, do a quick rinse with cool water. Cold water helps to seal the cuticle and lock moisture into your hair. To absorb excess moisture, use a micro fiber towel as they help reduce static and frizz. Use a sensible amount of a good leave-in conditioner selected based on the texture and condition of your hair. Too much product leaves hair looking weighed down and completely lifeless. Pre-dry hair with your blow-dryer as you run through it with your fingertips to get rid of additional excess moisture- this will make blow-drying the hair easier. Separate your hair into sections and begin blow-drying each section. The nozzle of your blow-dryer should always be facing down in the direction of your hair growth as this will help minimize frizz and fly-aways. Quality round brushes are also vital in achieving a quality blow-dry; I recommend Ergo round brushes, they are fantastic quality brushes that will last you a very long time. To finish your blow-dry, smooth your hair with a bit of shine serum for that gorgeous finished product. An element that has a profound effect on hair health, appearance, and overall behavior is the weather. The winters cold, for example, doesn’t just make you feel cold, but it also has the tendency to create drier and duller results for your skin and hair. While it doesn’t have the drying effects of winter, the summer heat can be equally frustrating. During summer our hair tends to get oilier faster, can fall victim to humidity, and the sun can seriously damage your hair if you aren’t careful to protect it (a leave-in with SPF or a chic hat are a couple of ways to do this). The best way to go about ensuring that your hair is staying healthy and looking beautiful despite the weather is to be flexible with your hair routine. As a master hair colorist, one piece of advice that I always give my clients is to change up their hair routine with the season. During summer, you naturally want to go for products that are lighter, yet still pack the same dose of nutrient punch for the hair. Below is a list of some of my absolute favorites- the summer hair saviors- as I like to call them. Kérastase Discipline Fluidissime Anti-Frizz Hairspray: I am a huge fan of the Kérastase product line in general, especially this particular product. This is a thermal anti-frizz hairspray making it a great option for styling. It provides amazing control, yet doesn’t give you that sticky and stiff feel that comes along with many other brands of hairspray. It’s double the benefit because it protects your hair from the heat, and actually helps make it easier to blow-dry. Other benefits include mega-watt shine that lasts for up to 72 hours, and it is a strong product for a wide variety of hair types (fine, coarse, or even unmanageable). Sebastian Dry Clean Only Dry Shampoo: Dry shampoo is possibly one of the greatest gifts bestowed upon mankind- if you are a female with long hair, you know that I am not exaggerating. Most of my clients go through bottles very quickly and even faster in summer because the weather makes our hair susceptible to getting oily and our activity levels tend to be higher during the summer. Life Hack: Exercises to Help Relax You

These last few weeks I’ve rediscovered the importance of relaxation for your health, well-being and beauty (it’s extremely important for your skin and hair). I think the fact that I was in Hawaii was the catalyst because even though I was there for work, a bit of rest and relaxation is embedded into Hawaiian culture and you can’t help but partake (when in Rome, as the saying goes). I noticed that throughout my time there I was feeling better than ever- more energized, happier, more productive- and I realized that it was 100% necessary to incorporate a little more “me” time into my daily routine. The reality is that I (as I’m sure many of you) am a busy person, so finding that time between work, travel, fitness, and social obligations is a challenge. That’s why it’s vital to get creative, rather than reasoning that I don’t have time began combining two in one: exercise and relaxation. Each week I make the conscious decision to have at least one of my workouts provide me with relaxation benefits as well. Below are my favorite ways to break a sweat, de-stress and relax: Yoga: It should come as a surprise to no-one that yoga is number one on this list. There is nothing more calming for me than going to Hot 8 or Corepower Yoga for a serious sweat session. The benefits of yoga are innumerable- stronger immune system, more focus, clarity, healing for physical and psychological distress- it’s an activity unlike any other. I am a fan of hot yoga (yoga done in a heated room), but there are various methods to choose from- Bikram, hatha, vinyasa flow, and the list goes on. Hiking: I am lucky to live in LA because we have so many amazing hiking trails. My favorite are the ones in Malibu, in particular Los Leones, they are challenging but the reward of that ocean view at the top of the world is priceless. Hiking is a great workout because you are dealing with unpredictable terrain and inclines that demand the use of your full body. I joke with my friend that there is no other activity that will make your booty look quite as good as hiking. I also find that being in nature and breathing the fresh air brings a deep sense of calm to my soul. I generally feel invigorated and extremely present after my hikes which I primarily reserve for Saturday mornings. I can’t believe that summer 2016 is upon us! This year is flying by so quickly, but I can’t complain because my favorite season is officially a few short weeks away. Whatever your travel plans may be this year, I hope you spend a significant amount of time relaxing at the beach. Not only is it beautiful, but being out in nature (especially by the ocean) is a soul-gratifying experience; Dig your feet into the sand, close your eyes and simply listen to the waves, and you will automatically understand what I mean. There is, however, one inevitable downfall of vacationing by the ocean and in tropical climates: it wreaks havoc on your hair. As you may know if you follow me on Instagram, I have been traveling back and forth to Hawaii for work, and it has given me the opportunity to truly figure out what to do to keep my hair looking picture-ready in tropical weather. Below are my top three tips for how to keep hair looking picture-perfect as you spend your day having fun in the sun: Embrace nature: Lets be honest, no matter what you do, your immaculate blow dry is not going to look so immaculate after a beach day. The air and the wind give you that messy, tousled effect, and as far as I am concerned, the best thing to do is go with the flow- embrace it! Instead of trying to beat the inevitable, use a product that will enhance what is naturally happening. One of my absolute favorite hair products for tropical weather is Bumble and Bumble’s Invisible Oil. This lightweight oils helps detangle and de-frizz beach hair as well as protecting it from sun damage. Braid your hair: Braids are definitely having a moment right now- you don’t have to look any further than Pinterest to see that they are all the rage. I love them because there is a variety of types you can do and it’s a pulled together hairstyle that has longevity. Braids and the beach is like champagne and strawberries- a perfect combination! Loose braids are always better because tight braids pull and damage the hair. I recommend using the Bumble and Bumble Invisible Oil when you put the braid in so that when you brush it out you will be left with gorgeous waves (think of it as two hairstyles in one). Aloha from Honolulu! I’ve discovered a new favorite work/play destination– Hawaii! Over the last few months, I’ve been lucky enough to travel to the island two times in less than two months (and hopefully there will be many more). I know that the last thing I have to do is sell you on the benefits of going to a place that’s quite literally paradise, just the clear blue ocean and warm sand is reason enough, but I put together a travel guide for Honolulu for those of you who may be traveling there this summer. Eat: 53 by the Sea  When in Hawaii it should be a requirement to indulge in seafood and, lucky for me, seafood is my absolute favorite. For my fellow aficionados, you must go to 53 by the Sea; Not only will you be completely blown away by the food, but the view is absolutely breathtaking. My personal recommendation is the Macadamia Nut Crusted Mahi Mahi, so delectable that it melts in your mouth. Cocktails: Duke’s Waikiki Nothing makes me feel like indulging in cocktails than warm winds at night, so I was thrilled when I came across Duke’s Waikiki. Duke’s has fun cocktails, a Japanese dinner menu for small bites, gorgeous views, and a rich history. As it turns out, this incredible place is named after Hawaiian legend Duke Paoa Kahanamoku, an Olympic gold medalist (for swimming) and thirteen-time Sheriff of the city and county of Honolulu. Hair: Salon Blanc As a Master Hair Colorist, I am absolutely enamored with what I do and it is difficult for me to find others who share my level of passion for hair, but at Salon Blanc I found my tribe. The owner, Alan V, and the group of incredible colorists who work there are incredibly talented people whose love for what they do is blatantly apparent in their impressive dedication and beautiful results. I am unbelievably lucky- I have two incredible cities that I get to call home: Los Angeles, which is my current home base, and Chicago, my native city. Making the decision to move to LA was not an easy one; As excited as I was about LA sunshine, I knew that I would miss the Windy City (and my amazing, beautiful, incredibly tight-knit family). Flash forward nearly a decade later and I find myself in the position as a Master Hair Colorist where I get to travel (and travel a lot) for work- I am on an airplane multiple times a month and one of my top destinations is always Chicago. A few days ago, as I was packing to fly back there once again, I thought of all of the awesome places I was looking forward to visiting once I landed, and it dawned on me that you might love to hear some of my recommendations. Below is a list of my Top Five Destinations in Chicago: Fitness: East Bank Club For me, the quality of the gym I go to really matters because it actually inspires me to work out. I can’t just go to a room with a bunch of fitness equipment, it simply won’t cut it. Enter the East Bank Club- this place is gorgeous and it offers the most extensive list of quality workout classes, there is something going on almost every single hour. There is also an array of options for dining, a juice bar, and a sun deck. It is pretty much a great place to hang out for the day! Hair Heaven: Bravco I am a Master Hair Colorist so no matter where you are I am going to be looking out for your hair. This small, family-owned shop off Oak Street has an extensive inventory of quality hair and beauty products- it’s like a beauty mecca! Shopping: Space519 This cute shop is a fashionista’s heaven; It carries a refined collection of clothing, home decor, and beauty products, and their setup is too cute for words. If you want to see for yourself, check out their adorable Instagram account (@space_519). Visit: Millennium Park This park definitely lives up to the hype. It was originally created to celebrate the millennium (hence the name), but ended up opening in 2004, three years behind schedule. I am so excited for this weekend- directly after I finish writing this article I am heading to Stagecoach. For those who don’t know, Stagecoach is a country music festival that happens annually in California. I am ready for some great music and unforgettable memories with some of my best friends- for me, that’s what music festivals are all about. I am no stranger to the festival circuit, in fact, I go to a few each year and added another one to the list a few weeks ago by going to Coachella for the very first time. With festival season in full swing, I have compiled a list of Music Festival Must-Have’s; Having these essentials on hand will allow you to relax, let go of your worries, and lose yourself in the music. Hat: As a Master Hair Colorist, the first thing I think when it comes to “essentials” of any sort is how to protect the hair. Many music festivals happen in the summer where the weather is hot or unpredictable. The hat will save your hair and keep your hair color from dulling by protecting it from sun damage. On the other hand, if you happen to encounter rain (like a friend of mine randomly did at Squamish Music Festival last year), it will keep you looking cute even if underneath the hat your hair is a frizzy mess. Hand Sanitizer: This may be the least attractive of all recommendations I have ever made, but in this case it is highly necessary. For those of you who have been to a music festival before, you know that the vibe is not exactly that of the Four Seasons- in fact, it’s the exact opposite. Keep hand sanitizer in your bag at all times so you can stay germ-free and healthy amongst a slew of people and outdoor bathrooms. Cross-body Bag: The last thing you want is have your arms occupied with extra weight when all you want to do is dance and have fun. However, lets face it, as a woman, there are things you need to carry around with you that a small little clutch just won’t accommodate. I love cross-body bags because they are a stylish and easy option that come in a variety of sizes (select one big enough to hold your essentials). Your Dancin’ Shoes: I am going to define this as whatever you are most comfortable in- for me, it’s wedges, while other people love sneakers or flat sandals. LA to Hawaii to San Francisco to Arizona, back to LA, then straight to the airport the next morning to fly to Chicago- this is a typical week and a half of my life as a Master Hair Colorist and Wella Educator. Saying, “I travel a lot,” would be the understatement of a century, but I wouldn’t have it any other way; In fact, it’s one of the things that I love most about the career I’ve enthusiastically worked to create. When you are traveling as much as I am, learning how to be good at packing is basically a survival skill. We’ve all been there when you arrive to your destination only to realize that you are missing essentials that will no doubt effect your trip. No matter where I am going or for how long, the following five are my must-have items on every trip. Dry shampoo: It should come as no surprise that the first thing I put on my non-compromise list is hair related. Dry shampoo is like a gift from the Gods; It’s a huge time-saver which is essential on a trip- who want’s to spend time washing and styling their hair when they can be out exploring? Not only does it save you a headache, but it’s also incredible for adding a little volume to your hair. My favorite dry shampoo is Wella’s EIMI Dry Me Dry Shampoo, try it and let me know your thoughts. Probiotics: Skipping around from one place to the next tends to compromise your eating schedule and you are most likely trying new cuisine to get a feel of the local flavor. This is one of the best parts of travel, but it can wreak havoc on your stomach causing you pain and bloat- yet another thing you don’t want to deal with EVER, but especially when you are traveling. A great way to prevent that is to take strong probiotic every morning on an empty stomach. Probiotics balance the good bacteria in your gut which help with digestion and inflammation. If you’ve been keeping up with my blog, my social media, any article I’ve written for magazine, or interview that I have done, then you have no doubt heard me preach about the importance of healthy hair. The truth is that no matter how skilled your colorist or how amazing the products you use, they can only do so much if your hair is a frazzled mess. Overtime, we’ve talked about several different ways to get healthy hair- less heat styling, all natural products, even foods for healthy hair- but I would say that today’s tip is one of the (it not THE) most important of all: Relaxation. Stress is terrible for your health in general, and kills your hair directly and can also lead you to coping mechanisms that are damaging for hair (i.e. smoking, drinking, unhealthy food). The reality is that we are all busy and stressed out at least some of the time, so it’s vital that we take some time out to de-stress and center ourselves. Below are three of my favorite ways to disconnect and rejuvenate: Take a spa day: By far my favorite way to unwind is by going to a spa and pampering myself. I have an intense travel and work schedule pretty much year-round, and while I absolutely love what I do, it definitely takes a toll on me. Recently I took a weekend off at Spa Montage at the Montage in Laguna Beach after a particularly busy week. Facials, a detox wrap, a body scrub and a massage are just what the doctor ordered to get me feeling energetic and inspired. I highly recommend this spa for those of you who live in Southern California- it is otherworldly. View outside my hotel room balcony at Montage Laguna- breathtaking, isn’t it? Feeling refreshed and glowing after having spent the entire day at the spa getting facials, scrubs, and massages. Break a sweat: A spa getaway is wonderful, but to de-stress on a daily basis I like to hit the gym. As the saying goes, when your body feels great so does your mind; Working out helps to release endorphins (feel good chemicals in the brain that act as natural pain killers) which improve sleep and reduce stress. If working out at the gym by yourself sounds tedious, shake it up a little by looking to classes. There are so many to choose from that there will definitely be something that motivates you.
