Beach Hair, Don’t Care!

Beach Hair, Don’t Care!

I can’t believe that summer 2016 is upon us! This year is flying by so quickly, but I can’t complain because my favorite season is officially a few short weeks away. Whatever your travel plans may be this year, I hope you spend a significant amount of time relaxing at the beach. Not only is it beautiful, but being out in nature (especially by the ocean) is a soul-gratifying experience; Dig your feet into the sand, close your eyes and simply listen to the waves, and you will automatically understand what I mean. There is, however, one inevitable downfall of vacationing by the ocean and in tropical climates: it wreaks havoc on your hair. As you may know if you follow me on Instagram, I have been traveling back and forth to Hawaii for work, and it has given me the opportunity to truly figure out what to do to keep my hair looking picture-ready in tropical weather. Below are my top three tips for how to keep hair looking picture-perfect as you spend your day having fun in the sun: Embrace nature: Lets be honest, no matter what you do, your immaculate blow dry is not going to look so immaculate after a beach day. The air and the wind give you that messy, tousled effect, and as far as I am concerned, the best thing to do is go with the flow- embrace it! Instead of trying to beat the inevitable, use a product that will enhance what is naturally happening. One of my absolute favorite hair products for tropical weather is Bumble and Bumble’s Invisible Oil. This lightweight oils helps detangle and de-frizz beach hair as well as protecting it from sun damage. Braid your hair: Braids are definitely having a moment right now- you don’t have to look any further than Pinterest to see that they are all the rage. I love them because there is a variety of types you can do and it’s a pulled together hairstyle that has longevity. Braids and the beach is like champagne and strawberries- a perfect combination! Loose braids are always better because tight braids pull and damage the hair. I recommend using the Bumble and Bumble Invisible Oil when you put the braid in so that when you brush it out you will be left with gorgeous waves (think of it as two hairstyles in one). Wear a hat: Perhaps the most basic solution of all is to take a chic hat with you wherever you go! Wide brim, cap, fedora- no matter what your style, a hat is a great way to solve your beach hair dilemma. As a bonus, a hat is also the ultimate way...

Music Festival Essentials

Music Festival Essentials

I am so excited for this weekend- directly after I finish writing this article I am heading to Stagecoach. For those who don’t know, Stagecoach is a country music festival that happens annually in California. I am ready for some great music and unforgettable memories with some of my best friends- for me, that’s what music festivals are all about. I am no stranger to the festival circuit, in fact, I go to a few each year and added another one to the list a few weeks ago by going to Coachella for the very first time. With festival season in full swing, I have compiled a list of Music Festival Must-Have’s; Having these essentials on hand will allow you to relax, let go of your worries, and lose yourself in the music. Hat: As a Master Hair Colorist, the first thing I think when it comes to “essentials” of any sort is how to protect the hair. Many music festivals happen in the summer where the weather is hot or unpredictable. The hat will save your hair and keep your hair color from dulling by protecting it from sun damage. On the other hand, if you happen to encounter rain (like a friend of mine randomly did at Squamish Music Festival last year), it will keep you looking cute even if underneath the hat your hair is a frizzy mess. Hand Sanitizer: This may be the least attractive of all recommendations I have ever made, but in this case it is highly necessary. For those of you who have been to a music festival before, you know that the vibe is not exactly that of the Four Seasons- in fact, it’s the exact opposite. Keep hand sanitizer in your bag at all times so you can stay germ-free and healthy amongst a slew of people and outdoor bathrooms. Cross-body Bag: The last thing you want is have your arms occupied with extra weight when all you want to do is dance and have fun. However, lets face it, as a woman, there are things you need to carry around with you that a small little clutch just won’t accommodate. I love cross-body bags because they are a stylish and easy option that come in a variety of sizes (select one big enough to hold your essentials). Your Dancin’ Shoes: I am going to define this as whatever you are most comfortable in- for me, it’s wedges, while other people love sneakers or flat sandals. The only requirement is that you remain comfortable while walking around and dancing up a storm. Sunscreen: I am as adamant about protecting hair color and hair quality as I am about protecting the...

Spring Cleaning For Your Hair

Spring Cleaning For Your Hair

Spring is such a magical time in Los Angeles- everywhere you look the tree’s are sprouting flowers as if overnight and the city is filling with so much beautiful color. After weeks of hopping from one plane to the next, I am happy to come home and be witness to the first days of my favorite season in [one of my] favorite cities. The changing of season brings with it a necessity to change your routine and this is even more pertinent for the spring season because we are slowly transitioning from the winter chill to the summer heat. In my years as a Master Hair Colorist I’ve learned that consistently healthy hair means being flexible with your hair care routine so that it matches the demands of the environment. Here are my top tips for how to care for your hair as we transition into the warmer months: Deep condition: It works like clockwork each year, as soon as the weather gets warmer the demand for lighter hair color increases ten-fold. I totally understand wanting sun-kissed strands to match the mood of the season, but going lighter can be taxing for hair if you don’t take the proper steps to ensure hair health- it can leave your hair completely devoid of moisture. I highly recommend deep conditioning your hair often and especially prior to going lighter. The conditioning agents will be present in your cuticle throughout the procedure and will help protect the hair through the lightening process. My favorite product for deep conditioning is the Inphenom Superior Treatment Effect Hair Care Treatment hair mask; it works wonder! I can’t sing the praises of this hair products and this hair care line in general, it’s packaged magic! (DIY hair care tip: Coat your hair- avoiding the roots- with coconut oil and hit the steam room or a heated yoga class. The heat will activate the and work the oil into your strands leaving your hair silky and shiny. Do this once a week). Spring cleaning for your hair: Go through your hair products, toss out all the very heavy products and replace them with light hydrating products- a hydrating shampoo, hydrating daily conditioner, nourishing mast, leave-in spray/cream, light hold mouse, cream or spray. These products are perfect for the hot conditions of the spring/summer months and will not weigh your hair down making it look greasy and hard to style. Hard holding products cause buildup leading you to have to have to shampoo prematurely making your hair (you guessed it!) dry and harder to style. (Hair care fact: Light-hold styling products, more often than not, have anti-humidifying properties). Do you have any questions about products and hair care tips for...

Hot Tools for your Hair

Hot Tools for your Hair

As a Master Hair Colorist I always get question upon question about how to keep hair color looking fresh for as long as possible. The answer is simple: You have to keep your hair healthy! At this point you’re probably wondering, “Renee, I know that healthy hair is key- you’ve pointed that out about a hundred times- what am I supposed to do to keep my hair healthy?” Well, my dears, there are many answers to this question, but the most important one (which is also the topic of today’s blog) is to minimize your use of hot tools such as blow dryers, curling irons, and the worst of them all, flat irons.   If You Must, Use High-Quality Hot Tools If you can’t discontinue using them, then make absolute sure that you are using high-quality hot tools, this is definitely not the area where you want to economize. High-quality hot tools are not only better for your hair, but they will also last a lot longer than their cheap counterparts. I am very picky about the hot tools that I use when I am styling my hair or my clients hair and, after trying many different tools, I have developed a list of go-to’s that I can assure you will not damage your hair. For a blowdryer, my absolute favorite brand is Taiff, the only blowdryer on the market tested for true ionic power. It utilizes both negative ions (neutralizes static electricity and closes hair cuticle making your hair soft and shiny) and positive ions (naturally opens hair cuticle to enhance and absorb the benefits from your hair treatment). Taiff blowdryer is a true game-changer! Bonus Tip: When you are blowdrying your hair make sure that you are pointing the air flow in the direction your hair grows in order to prevent unwanted frizz. My favorite brand for a flat-iron is Ergo because not only is it a truly exceptional hot tool, it also reduces the severe breakage that is common with other flat irons. Ergo flat irons don’t pull your hair which causes it to break at the mid-shaft making your hair dull and weak. Last, but certainly not least, my curling iron of choice is the Hot Tools CeramicTI Tourmaline Curling Iron. This amazing curling iron helps seal the hair cuticle and protects the integrity of the hair and it give you breathtaking curls. Bonus Tip: Do not, under any condition, put hair spray on your hair prior to curling it as it causes serious breakage. Curl each strand and let it cool before you even think about setting it with hair spray. Do you have any hot tools that you swear by and think I...

Three Benefits of the Keratin Hair Treatment

Three Benefits of the Keratin Hair Treatment

Easy to style, silky hair is one of the most coveted desires for many women. We all want to walk down the street while our beautiful, easy, breezy hair flows just perfectly in the wind. Unfortunately, this is the farthest thing from our hair reality. We have to resort to over-styling, putting too much product, and generally stressing out way too much over our hair. It takes up too much time, annoyance, and mental energy. For the ladies who feel like they practically sleep with the flat-iron in their hand, I highly recommend getting a Keratin treatment. It will change your life – trust me! On an episode of AOL’s Hairapy, I performed a Keratin treatment on Bethel, whose unruly hair was driving her crazy. Watch the video to see the gorgeous results then read on for the Top Three Benefits of the Keratin Hair Treatment. The Keratin Hair Treatment reduces styling time which is beneficial on a practical level, but also great for your hair. Imagine not having to put aside a huge chunk of time for your hair to look decent. Sounds like heaven, doesn’t it? While this is a huge perk, what is even better is that the less you expose your hair to heat the healthier your hair will be. The Keratin Treatment enables you to give your hair a break from heavy duty styling. Keratin is naturally found in your hair. Unlike the Japanese Hair Straightening Treatment it doesn’t change the internal structure of you hair to get it super straight. So what does it do? It works with the natural structure of your hair to ease the curl and get rid of the frizz. In short, it turns your hair into the best version of itself. You will not be victim to the whims of mother nature. Yes, you heard right! Your hair will not poof up in humid weather, nor will you have to run and hide from the slightest drizzle because you are afraid your hair will tangle and become unruly. For four to six blissful months you can experience the entire spectrum of weather without worrying about your hair looking terrible. Renee Taglia is located in a Beverly Hills California. A Master Hair Colorist’s Top Three Tips for Restoring Hair Color and Health

As a Master Hair Colorist there is one thing that I see more often than anything else: chemically treated, damaged hair. So many of the ladies who come in for hair color consultations are wary and traumatized from a previous hair color and/or treatment experience. The story usually goes a little something like this: “I have unruly hair to begin with and I really wanted it straight on a daily basis so I did one chemical straightening treatment too many.” Another common tale, “I had black hair and needed to be blonde ASAP so I over bleached,” and it goes on and on. Can you relate? I know most of you can! If you want healthy hair and gorgeous hair color that pops long after your salon visit, you need to start treating your hair like the living organism that it is (with the utmost care and respect!) This means being patient with drastic hair color changes, buying good, chemical-free hair care products, and being kind when styling your hair (don’t pull it, don’t brush too harshly). Below is an episode of the AOL’s Hairapy in which I had to avert a chemically treated disaster. Watch the episode below then read on for my Top Three Tips on How to Heal a Hair Disaster: Nix the flat-iron. Heat styling depletes the moisture from your hair and the biggest culprit of heat-induced damage is the flat-iron. It causes breakage, split-ends, and ultimately results in faded hair color and a dull appearance for you hair. For many staying away from the flat-iron is easier said than done, but, as a master hair colorist, I strongly advise that you try to (at least) reduce flat-iron use. Stick to blowdrying or even the curling iron, but even then use a good thermal spray to protect your hair. Deep conditioning treatments are your best friend. Regular deep conditioning treatments are an absolute must to nurse chemically damaged hair back to health. I recommend going to the salon one to two times a month. If you are seeking an at-home solution, try using coconut oil. Slather your hair with coconut oil (avoid roots, concentrate on tips) and leave it on for about an hour before you rinse. It will leave your hair feeling silky and your hair color shiny. Bonus points for hitting the sauna or a hot yoga class with the coconut oil in your hair as heat activates the coconut oil to work its magic on an even deeper level. Go for trims every four to six weeks. It’s funny how the most basic advice that we have been hearing since we were little kids is the most valid of all. Trimming your hair...

Three Tips for Instantly Healthy Hair Using Hair Color

Three Tips for Instantly Healthy Hair Using Hair Color

Last week was the conclusion of my blog series, Master Colorist’s Fall 2015 Hair Color Trend Forecast. This was a bittersweet event for me because I can talk about hair color trends all day, however, I am just as excited today to introduce a video series that I loved being a part of: AOL’s HAIRapy! I loved doing this series for a many reasons, but the fact that I got to give knowledge about hair care and use what I have learned in all my years as a Master Hair Colorist to help others takes the cake. There is nothing more satisfying than turning that chair around and witnessing a look of complete happiness on my clients face. In this episode, our lovely guest, Carole, is facing a problem that is all too common among women today: She simply does not have the means to touch up her hair color every six to eight weeks, so she resorts to doing her hair color herself. As a result, her hair is in a state of complete disarray. Carole certainly isn’t alone as this might just be the most common predicament hair colorist’s hear on the daily. The good news is that there are a few simple hair color tricks and hair care methods you can incorporate that will make your hair look healthier instantly and buy you time in between visits to the hair salon. Watch the video below then read my Three Tips for Instantly Healthier Hair Using Hair Color: It might seem counterintuitive, but a fresh hair color treatment (with a hair colorist who knows his/her stuff, of course) is actually a great solution. Adding color molecules to your hair gives hair structure and makes hair look healthier than it is. Keep it low maintenance by working with your natural hair color. If you know that it is going to be difficult for you to touch up your hair color due to schedule, finances, etc, you definitely want to stick to a color that works with your natural tones. This is great because it enhances what you already have and allows you to spend the time in between salon visits paying more attention to making your hair healthy rather than maintaining the hair color. Make sure to voice this to your hair colorist the minute you sit in the chair. Gloss treatments don’t just give hair shine, they actually improve the health of your hair. The gloss acts as an instant deep condition by return texture to your hair for instant moisture and silkiness. It also helps make hair more manageable so you’ll have to spend less time tampering with hot tools at home. Bonus: Intermittent gloss treatments...

Master Hair Colorist Picks the Top 3 Hair Looks from the 2015 Emmy Awards

Master Hair Colorist Picks the Top 3 Hair Looks from the 2015 Emmy Awards

Last night was the 2015 Emmy Awards in Los Angeles and our favorite television stars certainly did not disappoint! The gorgeous women who walked the red carpet at the Emmy Awards were definitely rocking some of Fall’s hottest hair color trends. There were so many stunning hair looks from this years Emmy Awards which made it extremely difficult for this Master Hair Colorist to select just three. But, I finally managed to do it! So, without further ado, here are my picks for the Top 3 Hair Looks from the 2015 Emmy Awards: My number one spot has to go to the ever-sexy Christina Hendricks! I’ve always loved Christina Hendricks’ red locks; Not only is she out of this world stunning, but her hair only adds to her gorgeous complexion. However, I have never loved her look more than I did at the Emmy Awards because she was rocking my absolute favorite hair color trend of Fall 2015: Ronze! Her light rose-gold hair was the perfect compliment to the exquisite gold detailing on her dress and the feminine pink hue in her makeup. This Mad Men bombshell made quite the exist as it was the last awards cycle for the iconic show. I can’t wait to see what she does next! In the number two spot for this years Emmy Awards we have Lady Gaga! Lady Gaga is another one of my favorites because she’s inventive and a risk-taker. I may not always love the looks she comes up with, but I appreciate someone who isn’t afraid to do things outside the box. At the 2015 Emmy Awards Lady Gaga was channeling Marilyn Monroe with her sleek blond hair and sophisticated black gown. Who would have guessed she could do minimal so well? Last, but certainly not least, on my list is Kerry Washington. The Scandal star was rocking yet another one of my favorite hair color trends for fall: Tortoise Shell! Check out the gorgeous chestnut highlights below the top of the hair creating a breathtaking, yet low maintenance look. Emmy Awards Edition: Master Hair Colorist Picks for Stunning Red Carpet Hair

Emmy Awards Edition: Master Hair Colorist Picks for Stunning Red Carpet Hair

September 20th is Emmy Sunday! The Emmy Awards are definitely my favorite awards show of the season because I love good TV. For me, the best part of the entire extravaganza is the pre-show where stars saunter in looking absolutely stunning. As a master hair colorist my eyes are glued to their hair color and style. Each year, I have my top picks for which talented lady killed it on the red carpet, and on Monday I will be announcing my Top Three Emmy 2015 Hair Color + Style winners. However, since the entire city of LA is already buzzing with excitement, I figured I may as well get in the Emmy spirit now by doing a throwback to last years Emmy Awards. So, without further ado, here are my favorite Hair Color + Style winners from the 2014 Emmy Awards. My absolute favorite look of the 2014 Emmy Awards was Sarah Hyland. The Modern Family actress rocks the sun-kissed hair color so well. I love that Sarah is not afraid to have some fun with her hair style and she decided to wear it in a messy bun for such a glamourous event. There is nothing stiff, confined or generic about this effortlessly chic look. I can’t wait to see what she does for the 2015 Emmy Awards. Yet another Modern Family goddess comes in at second place. Sophia Vergara, albeit predictable, never fails to turn heads. You can’t help but love her for being a woman who is not afraid to turn up the glamour to va-va-voom levels (reminiscent of one of the the sexiest silver-screen icons of all time- ironically also a Sophia- Sophia Loren). For Emmy 2014, she kept her locks looking silky, shiny and buoyant. Her hair color was the perfect shade of butterscotch-caramel! So, so gorgeous. No list would be complete without a blonde beauty in the mix. From the overwhelming number of gorgeous blondes (Taylor Schilling, Claire Danes, etc) at the 2014 Emmy Awards, my personal favorite was Robin Wright. I think Robin Wright is the epitome of elegance. I love the cool blonde tone of the hair color and how beautifully the sleek hair style looks with that killer suit. Can we just talk about that suit for a minute? This, ladies and gentlemen, is how to stand out in a sea of couture gowns! What were your favorite looks from last years Emmy Awards? Be sure to check back Monday for my list of Hair Style + Color winners from the Emmy Awards 2015!     Renee Taglia is Master Hair Colorist based in a Beverly Hills California. Master Colorist’s Fall Hair Color Trend Forecast Vol. One

Master Colorist’s Fall Hair Color Trend Forecast Vol. One

We are now well into September and the official first day of fall is less than two weeks away. As a master hair colorist, fall is definitely my favorite season because it brings with it rich, luscious hair color trends that I love. This fall, in particular, brings with it the most gorgeous shades I have seen in a long time and I can’t be more excited to share them with you. With each blog post for the next two weeks I will reveal a brand new hair color trend for the fall season that has celebrities, influencers, and the beauty community buzzing. This weeks hair color trend incorporates a fresh spin to a cold weather classic: Deep Mocha Brown. This cozy, delectable hair color is sultry, sexy and adds a touch of warmth to the chill outside. The key to a great Mocha Brown is adding dimension to the hair color to give hair buoyancy and avoid a flat, dull appearance. Adding dimension with various brown shades creates incredible plays of light for a thicker, more voluminous look. Another amazing perk to Deep Mocha Brown is that the shades are customizable to a variety of skin tones as demonstrated by the models below: On Relationship Expert, Arica Angelo (Instagram: @thearicaangelo), I customized a Deep Chocolate with a pop of color just underneath her part. This is ideal for the person who is looking for a low maintenance hair color because there won’t be a pronounced line of demarcation as the hair grows in. Lucia Porcayo (Instagram: luciaaaa21 ) is rocking my personal favorite version of this hair color trend: Cherry Chocolate. The hints of red make this a very rich hair color perfect for those who already have warmth in their skin. On Chammy (Instagram: @instacham), I dipped into two hot hair color trends  by combining Caramel highlights with a hint of Rose Gold. The play of color with this combination brightens her face and accentuates her eye shape and color. Renee Taglia is located in a Beverly Hills California.
